Boxee Now Does More Movies

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple News" @ 12:00 AM

http://www.appletell.com/apple/comm...t=Google+Reader

"Boxee has been an awesome service to use if you want to get easy access to full length TV shows from networks across the web. Along with having a great interface, Boxee even has their own set top box and payment system. All that said, access to TV shows all that Boxee really offered...until now. This week, Boxee is adding a new feature to their platform called Movie Library."

Boxee now offers movies from EZTakes, Indie Movies Online, MUBI* and Openfilm. They plan to add new partners and make ongoing tweaks/improvements to the service in the near future. Interesting to see more and more competition to the 'traditional' content providers like cable and satellite. The Boxee Box by D-Link is pretty impressive - anyone have any comparisons with Apple TV? I especially like the remote control with the QWERTY keyboard on the back side!

Boxee Adds to it's Options

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/boxee-rock...w+(Cult+of+Mac)

"Boxee, the innovative software solution that puts the Internet on your television, has long been among the brightest lights in the strange hinterland inhabited by users of AppleTV."

The more they can add the better, and this is a great addition that does feature a wide range of music. According to the info I read, the app will give you access to everything on the Wolfgang's Vault site, free up to 10 hours per month. After that you pay $4.00 USD per month to get streaming and other benefits such as store discounts. The author asks if Apple is missing the boat as Boxee and Hulu expand their reach, and I'd answer oh yes, that boat sailed a long time ago. Apple will have to really paddle hard to catch up since there are other options out there now that work pretty well.

Want to Work For Boxee?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.electronista.com/article...to.mobile.apps/

"A new job listing from Boxee has confirmed plans to enter into mobile apps. The startup is hoping to begin work with a Lead iPhone and iPad App Developer that would bring the company's media front end to Apple's handhelds. It also dropped a hint that an Android version is next, as the new hire's experience with Google's mobile OS would be 'a plus.'"

The job listing is posted here at Boxee.

Boxee, Now With Beta Support for AppleTV

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.macnn.com/articles/10/02...l.provides.key/

"The latest version of the Boxee beta, v0.9.20.10708, should now install normally on the Apple TV, its developer says. While it was possible to put the update on Apple's set-top prior to today, the process involved SSH, making it impractical for a casual user. The situation has changed thanks to a "resurrected" atvusb-creator tool."

To install you still have a few steps, outlined here, and those upgrading are "encouraged" to do a clean install.

Boxee Releases Bleeding-Edge Update

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/03/06/boxe...lu-rss-support/

"My favorite media center software, boxee, has just released a new alpha update for Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 users and Apple TV users. This update, which the boxee team classifies as bleeding-edge (which means, if you don't want to deal with any potential bugs, wait for the more stable release scheduled for March 24, 2009) adds the "App Box" -- boxee's version of the App Store, automatic updates, and most excitingly, a new video-optimized RSS reader."

In addition, you can use the new RSS reader to access the Hulu's public RSS feeds directly from Boxee. If you recall, two weeks ago Boxee was forced to remove Hulu from it's service, but the hackers were on top of it and came up with a workaround. That didn't last long though before it was broke, so they fixed it again. And again.

The process for adding content has gotten easier apparently, and if you are interested in loading up this latest version you can head over to Boxee for it. I would love to see this on the Apple TV but I'm just not comfortable hacking mine. I may end up doing it soon though if some quality updates don't come through for it from Apple.

Hulu on Boxee? Not after February 20th!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/02/18/boxe...to-remove-hulu/

"As a boxee user/proselytizer, I am gutted over the latest news: Hulu will be removed from boxee as of Friday (February 20, 2009). Hulu gives some insight into its request for removal from boxee in its blog post and at least Hulu seems to understand that this decision will be extremely unpopular for users. And I think that's an understatement."

"Content Providers" are the underlying reason for this, as well as the removal of Hulu from TV.com, the CBS portal that started in January. I would have thought they would have been overjoyed with the exposure, but it comes down to the almighty dollar, or lack thereof. Providers don't make anything from the Boxee web ads, they get their revenue from the cable companies subscriber fees and network ads. This seems short sighted to me, as I seriously doubt that someone watching Hulu on Boxee is going to suddenly go out and become a cable subscriber. I'm pretty sure they will find another way to access it, like via Front Row.

ABC Big on Boxee

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 09:00 AM

http://blog.boxee.tv/2009/01/19/boxee-gets-lost/

"According to Torrentfreak, Lost was the most downloaded TV Show on Bittorrent in 2008.. ABC has two other shows on that Top 10 list (Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy). It is clear ABC is producing great content, and it is no surprise that our users want to stream it on boxee."

Since I'm away from my beloved DVR (it used to be a Tivo but that is a painful story) for most of the week while at work, this sounds like a pretty good alternative. They hope to release an Apple TV version soon. I stream shows now from ABC, CBS and FOX but I'm always looking for something better, at least until I can afford to get a Slingbox. Or maybe I won't have to buy one?
