Get Your College Football Bowl Game Info With These Apps

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

"College football's bowl season kicks into high gear this week. These apps can help you enjoy all the pigskin action."

Sportacular Pro is a great all around sports app, but if you want apps specific to college football bowl gams you have several options. One of the best is ESPN Bowl Bound app featured in this list. You can also find bowl specific one on this list but I prefer the all around ones unless I happen to be going to a particular bowl game.

Education, Education and More Education

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 06:00 AM

"Apple, ever tinkering with the app store, has just released a very interesting option for developers: bulk educational discounts. As a developer you can now offer a lower price to a school when it buys your app in quantity."

This is a great option for developers, and even better for the schools taking advantage of it. I'm sure you have all seen the various education-themed stories in recent weeks. Some schools are giving iPads to their students, such as Stanford University. While other schools, like George Fox College, are giving their students a choice between a MacBook and an iPad when they register for classes. On top of that comes the news that 47% of students intending to buy a laptop for college will purchase a Mac. I like that they are embracing the iPad, and my hope is that college texts, and perhaps even high school textbooks, will eventually all be available in eBook or PDF versions that you can read on either a laptop or iPad. Or whatever tablet PC a student chooses. And hopefully the costs will drop because of it. Yeah, I'm a dreamer.

Another Option Emerges for Text Books

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 08:00 AM

"Big-time textbook publisher Macmillan is introducing new software called DynamicBooks, which will let college professors curate e-books for their own courses."

I hated having to pay the outrageous text book prices when I was in college, even more so when they jacked up the prices on used books, so now as a parent of a soon to be college student (fingers crossed) I'm all for any possible way to cut those costs down. With this method, they are posting the textbook online and allow professors to add paragraphs, add links, add extra sources and updates without having to check in with the author (I can seem some hazards here). Students can then purchase the books through the local school bookstore, or to go Dynamicbooks.com or CourseSmart to get them. Sounds like this is going to be just perfect for the iPad.

Yale University on iTunes

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 10:00 AM

"Interested in College lectures? Yale has always offered lectures and interviews on iTunes U, but you now can enjoy full classes."

Yale is among several universities that offer courses at iTunes, the best part is that they are free. There are a wide variety of classes from financial market classes to one on Milton, so they seem to cover a broad range of interests. This, as well as the other curriculum on iTunes, is well worth checking out.
