Not only those studios, based in the US, but also films from several of the European studios such as StudioCanal and E1 Entertainment. The moves will be available for purchase on the same day as their release on DVD. The rental terms are the same as other countries also, allowing 30 days to watch the film, but only 48 hours to finish once you start.

"According to research firm Gartner, Apple shipped 182,000 machines in the fourth quarter of 2009, earning the company a 5.5 percent total market share in France. Apple's emergence in fifth place came as a result of 43.5 percent year-over-year growth in the market."

Not only are they succeeding in France, but all over Western Europe with increased shipments during the fourth quarter of 2009. Worldwide, profits for Apple increased 50% on sales of 3.36 million Macs, which was the best quarter ever for Apple.

Does It Exist?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 07:00 AM

"It was inevitable really, as there was no way Stéphane Richard's comments on the iSlate would be allowed to go unanswered. So sure enough, Orange - who are owned by France Telecom - have sent some PR goodness to a UK media website denying that anything resembling a confirmation of the iSlate or Orange's involvement with such a device, if it even existed, ever happened and it was all in blogger's minds."

Of course they are referring to the faux pas from Stéphane Richard, an executive from France Télécom, when he let slip in an interview that indeed there was an Apple Tablet (with camera) that would be announced soon. So many rumors swirling around this one and in about 12 days we shall all learn the truth! So, do you think there will be a tablet announcement? If so, what features is it going to have?

In Other iPhone Sales News...

"Apple has achieved almost 10 percent of the entire French mobile phone market in 2009, according to leading French newspaper, Le Figaro."

The article from Le Figaro states that Apple has sold between 1.8 million and 2 million iPhones in 2009. This nice number gives the iPhone about 8.5% market share in the French mobile phone market. This translates to about 20% of the value of the same market. Making it available on so many carriers certainly has it's advantages, right Apple?

Price War in France With The iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 07:00 AM

"An iPhone price war currently underway in France may be our first glimpse of what we can expect if, as rumored, AT&T's exclusivity deal with Apple runs out next year, and the iPhone comes to other carriers."

Ah the free market forces at work. We can only hope that AT&T's hold on the iPhone does run out next year. Not that I would switch, as AT&T works fine for me in my area, but I'd definitely feel the benefits of a little competition and enjoy every minute of it!

This is just one of several locations Apple plans on opening up in France, including Montpellier, but no dates have been set on the other opening.

Oui, Two Apple Stores in France

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.appletell.com/apple/comm...med-for-france/

"Apple is extending its European reach by confirming the opening of two retail stores in France. One of these we've known about for a while, and will be situated in Paris. The other is more of a surprise, as Apple has chosen Montepellier, found on the south coast, as its second store location according to ifoAppleStore."

The first one will be in Paris, at an underground shopping mall called Carousel de Louvre. They are combining two empty stores to give them roughly 7,700 square feet of retail space. The second is in a town that has it's own university, so perhaps that is the draw. Both are supposed to open at some point during this summer.

Orange iPhone Exclusive in France Struck Down

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.macsimumnews.com/index.p...ce_struck_down/

"France's leading mobile operator, Orange, has failed to restore its exclusive deal with Apple to sell the latest version of the iPhone in France as the Paris Appeal Court confirmed a competition watchdog's ruling, reports Reuters."

I don't see how having the iPhone on one carrier hurts competition. The only thing it does do is give one carrier a phone that other carriers can't carry. In essence, the argument being made is that other companies simply can't compete with the iPhone. Maybe it's because I'm in the business and have been for so long, but I'm just a little jaded when it comes to cries of "competition" in the wireless industry. Is it really competition when every wireless carrier offers almost the same plans for almost the same price? Sounds more like collusion than competition to me. I wouldn't be surprised if the carriers in Europe, to avoid stupidity like this, just start doing what they do in the US: only have phones on different bands altogether. For example, a T-Mobile 3G phone (1700 Mhz) won't work on AT&T's 3G Network (2100 Mhz). It won't be long before carriers in Europe start changing up their networks just so only their devices will work on their network.

It should be noted that France's gripe was mainly with the 5 year length of the exclusive agreement, though, meaning you can do this horrible exclusive thing as long as you don't do it for too long. Isn't it nice to know your business practices are being guided by those geniuses of business also known as the government?
