Build Your Own Hackintosh Mini

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Desktops" @ 06:04 AM

http://lifehacker.com/5815715/how-t...r-less-than-600

"We've shown you how to build a Hackintosh with enough power to rival a Mac Pro, but for those of you who want a still powerful Mac on a budget you can build a Hack Mini. We'll show you what you need to build it and walk you through the entire OS X installation."

And walk through is the key here, as they really detail it step by step. Nice tutorial that, without accounting for your time, will cost you less than what you would pay in the Apple store. Of course it won't be quite as small as the official Mac Mini but it is pretty small.

Bad Dream for Hackintoshers

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/04/14/hack...v-discontinued/

"The Dell Mini 10v, choice of netbook hackintosh owners everywhere, has apparently been discontinued as of a week ago. I discovered that today when I couldn't find any on Dell's site, and confirmed it with a live chat with a support representative who told me it was discontinued last week. A message was left for Dell's Media Relations team but was not immediately returned."

He finally did get a reply, and Dell has end-of-lifed this item since they are going to update their netbooks with the Intel Pine Trail Atom processor. Dell couldn't tell him if the new processor would be hackintosh-able. So if you were planning on doing this, check out eBay or the refurbished section on Dell.

Having Problems Hacking Your Dell? Perhaps This Will Help...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 08:00 AM

http://lowendmac.com/mac2win/10m2w/...ell-mini-9.html

"Last April, I wrote about the Dell Mini 9 netbook I'd purchased (see In Praise of Netbooks), and how - despite Steve Job's put-downs of the entire netbook product category as "a piece of junk" - I found it a usable little computer, trading off screen, keyboard, and trackpad size against portability and low cost."

The author ran into problems when he tried to turn his Dell Mini-9 into a Hackintosh, but he finally worked through it and his pain is your gain if you are trying the same thing. Interesting article on how you go about hacking your Dell.

The Complete Guide To Building Your Own Hackintosh

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Desktops" @ 09:00 AM

"OS X is out there. You've seen it in coffee shops, on TV, in the laps of hipsters at the local taqueria. There‘s no shame in wondering what all the fuss is about. Hell, it's healthy to mix it up a little bit. If only the idea of sending Steve Jobs and the rest of Apple, Inc. thousands of your hard-earned dollars didn't send you into a cold sweat that only a game of Left4Dead can cure. Still, OS X is the subject of many glowing reviews. Even hardcore PC users are singing its praises. If you have the itch to try out OS X, but you're not down with shelling out the cash for a new Mac, we have one word for you: Hackintosh."

This is a really good detailed guide about what to get, how to get it, and what the consequences of each parts choice are. I'm not a big fan of Hackintoshes per se, mainly because I worry about upgrades breaking things, but I guess there's a place in the world for the industrious young lad who wants a Mac but doesn't dare buy one!

Captain Obvious Warning: 10.5.7 Breaks Hackintoshes

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Talk" @ 09:00 AM

http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/?p=3919

"According to this thread at the MyDellMini Forums, the just-released Mac OS 10.5.7 update breaks hackintoshed machines like the Dell Mini 9/Vostro A90 netbook. This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise and most self-respecting hackintoshers know better than to install any old update on their netbook willy nilly."

This is one of those things that make people not want to play with a Hackintosh, but the struth is it just means you have to be a little patient and can't pounce on every upgrade as soon as it comes out. I think deep down, for many people, this is the reason they want to see a Netbook of some kind from Apple themselves; no more worrying about updates.

Turn Your Dell Mini 9 Into a Hackintosh

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Talk" @ 11:00 AM

http://i.gizmodo.com/5156903/how-to...te-os-x-netbook

"There are a lot of netbooks on which you can install and run OS X, but if you're mindful of the handy comparison chart those lads at Boing Boing Gadgets have compiled, you'll know that the Mini 9 is about as ideal a platform as you'll find for a Hackintosh ultraportable: Everything from wi-fi, sound and the function keys down to the optional integrated mobile broadband card and the SD card reader are supported and work as they should. No hardware compromises at all. It's awesome."

Yet again the folks at Gizmodo deliver the goods. This is an excellent and extremely detailed explanation not only on how to get your Hackintosh Mini 9 working, but how to deal with every pitfall you may come across in doing so. I had a Mini 9 and the only reason I sold it was to get a few extra sheckles in hand to pay for my newly-purchased MacBook Pro. Had I stuck with my older Macs, I'd still have my Mini 9 today. If you've been holding off on doing this process for lack of a helping hand, I think you can safely take the plunge now (at your own risk, of course!).

Hackintosh on the Cheap

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Desktops" @ 09:00 AM

http://p0wnz.com/install-osx-1056-o...ell-vostro-410/

"If you missed out on the last p0wnz deal it looks like this deal from Dell is now bye bye see ya later gone. Sorry if you didn't take advantage of this because I got a 99.8% fully functional Mac Pro Hackintosh."

That really isn't too bad, actually. The Vostro 420 (the replacement for the 410) is going for under $500 on Dell's site right now. Not a bad way to dip your toe into the Mac waters. Of course you run the risk of not being able to do updates and so on, but if you can live with that, a Hackintosh might be for you.

Any of you folks out there running a Hackintosh of some kind?

MSI Wind = Hackintosh Made Simple

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Talk" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.jkontherun.com/2008/12/m...ind-netboo.html

"When I installed Mac OS X on my MSI Wind, one of the key missing features was the lack of WiFi support. Some folks opted to replace the Realtek 802.11b/g module with a compatible one, but I opted to use my EV-DO adapter for connectivity. GottaBeMobile notes that some MSIWind.net forum members are circulating an OS X driver for the Realtek WiFi module and confirm that it works. The driver doesn't cause OS X to see the hardware as an AirPort card, but apparently, you can still configure the WiFi and get it working."

One of the biggest pains in building a Hackintosh is getting the WiFi working, and it seems Realtek is going out of its way to make sure that the process is a bit easier. I was pondering getting a new Inspiron Mini next year (I sold my Mini 9 to get my MacBook Pro) but now I think the decision has been made for me to go elsewhere. MSI Wind, here I come!

I wonder if this means Jason will give making a Hackintosh a try now? Whaddya say, Jason?
