HDR App Head-to-Head-to-Head Test

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple Talk" @ 06:30 PM

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/apple/hdr...dr-updated/8165

"I did a casual high dynamic range (HDR) imaging test this morning. Apple HDR blows out the highlights, Pro HDR is heavy-handed and TrueHDR is the best."

Interesting that HDR definitely enhances iPhone photography in the example above, with a backlit, shadowed scene, but, in normal well-lit scenes like the example below, HDR really doesn't add much, at least in casual testing. Of course, this is a very subjective evaluation. Do you have a preference? I personally like the detail exposed by ProHDR.

Of course, at free for Apple HDR (assuming the right iPhone and iOS 4.1), $1.99 for Pro HDR, and $1.99 for TrueHDR, experimentation is inexpensive, and the author does state that he didn't try to fine-tune any of the apps, but simply used point and shoot on automatic mode. Nice to have these capabilities in a mobile phone!

A Guide to iOS 4.1 HDR Photography

"The iPhone 4's best new feature in iOS 4.1-besides not hanging up on people with your face-is its ability to capture HDR photos. But you've gotta use it correctly."

Gizmodo demonstrates the right and wrong way to use the HDR function in iOS 4.1. It's a pretty good quick-and-dirty guide to iPhone HDR. If you're new to HDR photography, it's definitely worth your time to click through to the whole article.

Hands On With iOS 4.1 HDR

Posted by Joe Johaneman in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 05:30 AM

"Just in case you missed it, iOS 4.1 was released this morning much to the delight of folks waiting for some of the enhancements like Game Center, bug fixes, speed fixes for 3G owners, and HDR photos. If you watched Steve's demo, you saw HDR (High Dynamic Range) in action, but the real question is whether HDR is worth it in the real world."

Tris Hussey over at The Next Web does a few experiments with the HDR in iOS 4.1 on an iPhone 4. The results look pretty good, in some cases. In fact, with pictures where there are elements that are blown out or underexposed while other elements look correct, HDR seems to work very well (as one would expect). Obviously, it doesn't make every photo look better (and can make some look worse), but since it always saves the original exposure, it's worth experimenting with. Personally, I can't wait to go outside later and try it out.

Find Out About HDR

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

"One hotly anticipated feature rolling out in next week's iOS 4.1 update is the new HDR (high dynamic range) option in the iPhone's built-in Camera app. The results are subtly improved and realistic looking photos, as opposed to the fake, over-processed look that is often the hallmark of HDR."

Interesting advantage with the subtle differences when you put photos side by side like in the above image. I don't think my eye for this type of stuff is all that great, but I can notice it. The article also explains exactly what HDR is and how it is accomplished so it is worth the read.
