Nvidia Comes Clean About GPU Problem, Old News for Apple

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.9to5mac.com/47483/nvidia...e+Intelligence)

"Nvidia is coming clean with Dell, HP and Apple owners who purchased some of the Laptops with discrete GPU "bumps" that sometimes caused failure. Apple went to extraordinary lengths (far beyond Dell or HP), covering Macbook Pros affected with these issues for up to three years and issuing refunds to those who paid for repairs."

I had my MacBook Pro repaired by Apple free of charge when the display died, caused by this very problem, and that was well over a year ago. If you have one of the affected machines and haven't had it in for repairs, you can find out more about it by reading this Apple support document. You can also go here to read the PDF of the settlement document from Nvidia.

MacBook Pro Video Warranty Extended

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...hree_years.html

"Illustrating the scope of a flaw in older NVIDIA graphics chipsets, Apple has extended its special warranty on the GeForce 8600M GT in certain MacBook Pros from two to three years. Those visiting Apple's support page for the video corruption and failure issues suffered by this portable generation have noticed that Apple has quietly added an extra year to its coverage, giving owners of the affected MacBook Pros free replacements as late as September 2011 depending on the date of purchase."

I had mine in to the Genius Bar a few short months ago for this very reason. This affects the older MacBook Pros, manufactured between May 2007 and September 2008. Per the Apple Support article, look for distorted or scrambled video on the screen or no video at all on either the computer screen or an external display. The last problem is what I suffered through, but they fixed for free so all I was out was about a week with no laptop and my time taking it in and picking it up. This affects the 15 and 17-inch models, and was written about back in October of 2008. Now there is a class action lawsuit about the problem, that includes HP and Dell owners.

NVIDIA is denying that the new uni-body MacBook Pros share the same material in their graphics chips that caused the problem with the older ones so it appears, at least for now, that those models won't suffer the same fate. NVIDIA initially told Apple last year that there was no problem with the chip in the older MBP's too, so I guess we shall see!

NVidia Update Yanked, No Explanation Given

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Laptops" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ns_unclear.html

"Apple has yanked a software update that was intended to fix graphics-related issues with its latest notebooks just two days after pushing the patch to users via its Software Update mechanism. It's unclear what prompted the removal of the patch, released Monday as NVIDIA Graphics Update 2009 and pulled from the company's website and automatic software update system on Wednesday."

I have to say that despite the complaints mentioned in the article and in the Apple Forums, I have had no such issues since upgrading. In fact, as I mentioned on the day the release of the update was posted, it actually fixed my only issue with my MacBook Pro's display and that was it not waking up when my Dell monitor was connected. I'm glad I grabbed it before they yanked it because it has made my life a whole lot easier!

Nvidia Update 2009 for Unibody Macs & MacBook Air

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Laptops" @ 12:00 PM

http://support.apple.com/downloads/...ics_Update_2009

"This update improves cursor movement when using the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter with the Mini DisplayPort enabled MacBook Air, MacBook and MacBook Pro. It also improves playback of HD video running on systems with NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT or GeForce 9600M graphics."

I only had one issue with my Mini DisplayPort, and it was if I had my Dell monitor plugged in, the computer would freeze on awakening from sleep mode. This update seems to have repaired the issue, though, so even if it does nothing else for me, I'm happy. The download is available from Software Update so go grab it.
