Updates to the Macbook Line From WWDC 2012

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 04:30 PM

http://www.macworld.com/article/116...na_display.html

"Along with updating the existing MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, Apple has reinvented the MacBook Pro with a Retina display, as announced at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference keynote on Monday."

Thorough run through of the updates by Macworld from WWDC on the Macbook line. If that isn't enough, over at HardMac they also have a nice list of all the updates, located here. I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon from my Macbook Air 128GB SSD, but if I did, I must say the Macbook Pro line is really tempting. What are your thoughts on these updates to the line?

Final Cut Pro X Announced

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.photographybay.com/2011/...rmeet-liveblog/

"There is a crowd growing outside of the conference room of the Final Cut Pro User Group Supermeet right now. We're all waiting to take our seats to see what everyone at NAB 2011 has been talking about for the past couple of days . . . the unveiling of the next generation of Final Cut Pro."

Interesting stats from this presentation, such as two million users and 94% customer satisfaction rate, that was given at the 10th Annual SuperMeet for FCP users. This new version has a ton of updates to it such as support for all processor cores via Grand Central Dispatch, high-def 4k resolution, the ability to edit during import, scalable rendering, resolution independent playback system and most important to the crowd the fact that it will be 64-bit. The updated version is called Final Cut Pro X (or FCPX as they have come to refer to it) and will be available via the Mac App Store in June of this year for $299.00 USD.

"With the release of Logic Pro 9.1 back in January, Apple's pro audio software made the historic jump to becoming a 64-bit application on Snow Leopard. Thursday's 9.1.1 update smooths over a few things."

In January Logic Pro was updated to 9.1, but this time both the express and pro versions got the update to 9.1.1. You can find detailed information on what was fixed for Logic Pro here, and Logic Express here.

FileMaker Pro 11 Released

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...e_creation.html

"FileMaker Pro 11, the latest version of the Mac database software, was officially released Tuesday, packing in improved chart visuals, "on the fly" reporting, a new Quick Find capability, and a number of productivity tools that aim to make database creation simpler and quicker."

The last update was in 2009 when they released FileMaker 10. They also released updates to the entire line of FileMaker products. The retail price for FileMaker Pro 11 is $299.00 USD, or $179.00 USD to upgrade. The prices for advanced and server go up from there. I haven't used FileMaker in years, do any of you use it on a regular basis?

Speaking of Patents...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.macnn.com/articles/10/03...by.macbook.air/

"Apple has this week won the rights to three patents, all covering the construction of unibody MacBooks. Two of these document the MacBook Air, which was the first Apple notebook to use a combination frame and casing made out of a single block of aluminum. Aside from external design, the other patent covers the Air's multi-touch glass trackpad, which has also since spread to other Apple portables. Its origins can be traced back to the iPhone."

The last of the patents awarded was for the MacBook Pro, shown above. I think it is about time for a revamp of this line don't you?

ACD Systems Ready for Move to Mac

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.acdsee.com/offers/proformac/

"The wait is over for professional photographers who want a faster, affordable, all-in-one photography workflow system to use on their Macs. ACD Systems International Inc. today opened beta testing for its new ACDSeeTM Pro Photo Manager for Mac, the first version of the company's acclaimed Pro Photo Manager software for Mac applications."

Well, honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of ACDSee's pro offerings, but that's honestly more because I tend to need more organization than manipulation. That being said, they're usually insanely powerful, fully featured, and usually can replace a photo processor (like Bridge or Lightroom) and an organizer (like iPhoto or Picasa). I may jump on the beta just to see what this one is like. Any of you guys about to jump or already in on the beta? If so, how's it going?
