Isn't it Time to Recycle Those Old Electronics?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 04:00 PM

http://dealnews.com/features/Out-wi...ics/535731.html

"This Christmas, there were reportedly nearly 7 million new Android and iOS activations (between December 24 and December 25), which was largely a result of smartphone gift-giving."

Great article on some resources so you know where to go to recycle, or get some cash for those electronics that you have replaced with newer, faster, better versions. I also find that putting them on craigslist seems to work pretty if they are still functional so someone else can get some use out of your newly replaced items. If they aren't functional, check with your local garbage/recycling company for ideas on where to take your non functioning items.

Manhattan and Brooklyn, Bring Out Your Dead... Electronics That is...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Talk" @ 08:00 AM

"You got all the tech gifts you wished for this holiday season, so now it's time to bring your old stuff to Tekserve for proper disposal. Don't miss our eWaste Recycling Event, this Saturday, Jan. 15th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of our store, as well as Sunday and next weekend across Manhattan and Brooklyn."

Fans of Monte Python will recognize the reference in the title, but the point is that you can take your old electronics gear to several locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn tomorrow. Great way to get rid of that stuff that has been collecting dust, and while you are at it you can enter to win several prize drawings, one of which is a new MacBook Air 11 inch laptop. Everything to gain, nothing to lose, except for some electronic junk I suppose.

Recycle Your Old Apple Computer and Get Some Cash for the Effort

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Articles & Resources" @ 12:55 PM

http://www.apple.com/recycling/computer/

"Apple's commitment to the environment includes finding the most efficient ways to reuse or recycle electronic equipment, including computers and displays from any manufacturer."

Well, not exactly cash but you do get an Apple Gift Card for your trouble via the recycling program set up in conjunction with PowerOn. You can find more details at the exchange website via the Apple Store. Basically you input your details from your old computer, laptop or desktop, and they will tell you the amount you will get in the way of an Apple Store gift card. Pretty simple. Oh and they also do non-Apple displays if you have any of those laying around.

Recycle or Reuse Your Old Macs

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Classic Apple" @ 07:00 AM

"So let's say you finally decided to let that strawberry iMac go into the great off position in the sky (probably because you bought an iPad, right?)."

They have come up with a list if it still works, and a list if it doesn't. Personally, I always liked the idea of an old Mac SE being turned into an aquarium. I wish I had kept mine because that is how I'd use it. But if you would like a new mailbox or a planter, they have some tips for you.

For the Super Geek

"Of all the eccentric Mac-lover accessories out there, these clocks might be some of the most phoned-in I've ever seen: they're basically just old Apple keyboards clawed out of an electronics dump with their keys shaken loose and stuffed with cheap horological guts."

Geekware makes some interesting products. You can check out the full line here.

New Yorkers, Recycle E-Waste For FREE This Saturday!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Articles & Resources" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.tekserve.com/service/recycling.php?utm_source=SubscriberMail&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=This Saturday: Recycle Your eWaste at Tekserve&utm_term=&utm_content=037a8fb6568648dfa86ae5ce4695fe78

"Tekserve has teamed up again with the Lower East Side Ecology Center to offer free electronics recycling on Saturday, January 16th from 10a-4p. Recyclable items include computers, monitors, fax machines, copiers, DVD or VCR players, radios, telephones, cell phones, televisions, cameras, and stereo equipment."

Pretty good deal if you live anywhere near New York City, dispose of any e-waste you might have and all for free! It's happening in front of Tekserve, 119 West 23rd Street near 6th Avenue, and the Lower East Side Ecology Center is lending a hand. Tekserve also has a nifty giveaway associated with this event. Per the website, "to celebrate the event, anyone bringing electronics to be recycled can register at Tekserve for a raffle to win a MacBook Air. All participants in the event will also receive a coupon for a $25 discount on any new current model iPod (except Shuffle) or computer purchased within 30 days after the event. Coupons cannot be combined with other offers." They are also giving participants a $25.00 USD coupon good towards any Mac or iPod (excluding iPod shuffle) from Tekserve, good until February 15th 2010.

Well, It Is Almost Christmas

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 09:00 AM

"With Time Capsules epidemically failing after an average of 18 months and 22 days, it might be time to start thinking about an alternative use for your pristinely albino, Apple-branded router once its body squirts out its last breath of 802.11-n ectoplasm."

Guess that is one way to recycle your Time Capsule. You can get the low down on how to transform your Time Capsule into conversation piece at Instructables

I Haz a New Bed!

""I'm more of a dog person, but the "Cats Love Macs" photo stream on Flickr is one of my guilty pleasures. (Yeah, I know)."

Reminds me of the aquarium that was built using an old Mac SE. Come to think of it, I wouldn't mind having one of those aquariums. It is almost Christmas, maybe I'll send myself one.
