Apple TV is Roku's Best Friend

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 06:00 AM

"When Apple launched their second-generation Apple TV back in September many thought it change the way we viewed our media. Apple's AirPlay feature where you can stream video from an iOS device or Mac to an Apple TV just adds to the argument."

That "halo effect" that is usually mentioned when talking about Apple products and how their products generate sales of other Apple products, apparently also works with competing products. The Roku CEO Anthony Wood stated that he feels Apple generated new sales for them since they brought attention to the category. Roku sales are about to surpass $50 million this year and CEO Wood thinks they will hit $100 million in 2011. You can read his interview with Business Insider here, but it is interesting he would give credit to Apple. Well, perhaps interesting isn't the word, surprising I suppose would be better. You usually don't hear kudos when it comes to Apple from their competitors. Credit deserved.

Roku Drops Prices Ahead of Apple Event This Week

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/30/...-69-99-hd-xr-t/

"Looks like Roku's going aggressive on price with its lineup of streamers in response to Sony's new $130 Netbox streamer, the upcoming Google TV launch, and rumors that we'll see that rumored $99 iOS-based Apple TV arrive on Wednesday."

The standard def box went down to $59.00 USD, the regular HD is $69.00 USD and the HD-XR box is at $99.00 USD, all dropping in price from $20-$30.00 USD. This is getting to the point to have one just for the UFC they offer, but if they would throw in some NFL RedZone, I'd buy it in a heartbeat and lose Dish Network all together. But I think I will first wait to see what Apple has in store for us on Wednesday.

Roku Updates Their Box, Adds Netflix and UFC

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.digitalhomethoughts.com/...-interface.html

"There is nothing wrong with the current Roku interface, but with all the gaming consoles now offering Netflix it was time for them to bring a bit more to the game."

For me, something like this means one more nail in the coffin for my Dish Network. I'm almost to the point that I can do away with it and watch what I want via other sources such as Hulu or any number of online sources. I just have to convince my wife, and more importantly, make it as easy to use as the Dish Network set up is, I wonder when they are going to be offering Red Zone from the NFL channel?

Roku Adds Their Own Channel Store

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/144...l?lsrc=rss_news

"Roku will announce on Monday a major update to the software powering the company's Roku Player models. As part of that update, the company will also introduce the new Roku Channel Store."

Roku is certainly heading in the right direction, having already provided streaming content from Netflix, Amazon's Video on Demand and MLB.TV. Now with the new Channel Store, you get ten more channels to choose from including blip.tv, Flickr, Pandora and Revision3. They have 3 boxes to choose from ranging in price from the standard definition box for roughly $80.00 USD to the HD box for about $130.00 USD.
