Hello World!

Posted by Lita Kaufman in "Apple Thoughts Site Updates" @ 08:00 AM

Lita Kaufman, forced to write about herself in first person, has this to say about her Apple cred:

I am a New York based attorney and a proud Mac user for over 23 years, which means I fit into the cliché of an Apple product owner all too easily. My introduction to the world of Apple and Macintosh came in August, 1985, when as a graduate student in Medieval and Early Modern History, I volunteered to be my department's representative to the new Social Sciences computer lab. The lab, like Noah's ark, featured two each of IBM PC ATs, Osbornes, Franklins, Apple IIs and a strange looking computer called a Macintosh. The attraction was instantaneous, and since there was no version (at that time) of SPSS (Statistics Package for the Social Sciences) for the Mac, I had near exclusive use of the little computer. That situation lasted only until a Laser Writer arrived, and the half-dozen candidates working on their PhDs on the lab's other computers promptly got into fist fights over time slots to re-type their dissertations on the Macintoshes.

The first Mac I owned was the iconic 512ke, and my dearest companion through law school, and eventually replaced by a Mac SE in 1989. Ever the maverick, I elected not to have an internal hard drive, but opted to purchase a 100 MB external Jasmine hard drive. When talking was about my new computer at a cocktail party, an appalled co-worker asked me what in the world I would need all that disk space for. I shrugged and simply replied, "stuff."

My fascination with both Macs and storage is still a running joke among my friends and colleagues. I have the firm belief that an unmounted hard drive is a crime against nature. My current rig includes a 2.66 ghz quad-core Mac Pro, a pair of Apple Cinema Displays, 10 terabytes of hard drive space (just because, you know, it never hurts), a 17" MacBook Pro, an AppleTV, 180 gb iPod Classic, and an iPhone 2G. That doesn't include the layabouts that I can't bear to part with - the G5 tower, G4 iBook, 15" PowerBook, and the worst Macintosh ever made - the Performa 550.

Welcome to Apple Thoughts!

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Thoughts Site Updates" @ 08:00 AM

Let's get the obvious stuff out of the way. There are lots of Apple-related sites out there right now, and there will be many more out there after we launch this one. It's not a stretch of the imagination to say that Apple fan sites are nothing new, for the most part.

At Thoughts Media, we believe that sites aren't just places for you to go to read, but to participate in a community that's interested in what you're interested in. Think about it. How many times have you gone to a site that falls into your favorite topic and the comment section is uncivilized, off topic, or outright useless? How many times have you read a review of a product that didn't appear genuine, or that you realized was unfairly biased toward the company that made it because they were a sponsor? How many times have you left a site because the forums were like the wild west?

We don't do that here.

Apple fans and enthusiasts are the most passionate and devoted to their platform in all of computing. We choose Apple products for many reasons; aesthetic reasons, functionality, stability, and so on. What Apple fans deserve is a community that is as supportive to them as they are to the platform, and that's where we come in. In that respect, we promise five things to every single person who visits:

  1. A healthy flow of daily news and views on the top Apple-related stories of the day.
  2. A consistent flow of reviews on the latest Apple and Apple-related products on the market.
  3. A community that will be supportive and helpful yet still be open to discussion and debate.
  4. An honest look at our favorite Cupertino-based company with no room for shilling and fanboism.
  5. An honest desire to be your one-stop shop for everything Apple-related.

As Executive Editor, I take the role of doing the right thing for our readers very seriously. We won't "love" a product simply because Apple makes it or because a sponsor asks us to review it. Your trust is the most important thing we have and without that we have nothing.

Welcome aboard, thanks for reading, and I hope we can live up to your expectations as well as the fantastic example set for us by the other sites in the Thoughts Media network. I want to thank Jason for this opportunity and his hard work setting us up, Fabrizio for the behind-the-scenes work in setting up the site, the Thoughts Media network of sites for having us, and my team for agreeing to help bring this dream to fruition.

We won't let you down!
