Do You Share Your Location?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 04:00 AM

http://www.businessinsider.com/most...locatoin-2011-1

"Location-based services are going to have a hard time overcoming privacy fears and proving their worth."

The survey about privacy and sharing with location-based services was done by Microsoft, and it does reveal some interesting tidbits. Over 80% of those polled have never used a location-based service to tell others where they are, or to find the location of their friends, family etc. And of the roughly 20% that had used it, the most popular service was Google Latitude or Places at 52%, followed close behind by Facebook Places at 50%. Foursquare was only used by 15% of those users in the United States, and less in the other countries polled (Japan, Canada, UK and Germany). I am not too surprised that the "have-used" crowd was smaller than the "have-not" used crowd, but I didn't think the disparity would be that large between them. And for those that use those services, I would have thought that Foursquare, for all it's hype, would have had a greater percentage of users. I wonder just how many that said they didn't actually did but didn't know it. I guess the bigger point they are trying to make here is that people are just not comfortable putting that information out there yet. Personally I don't have too big a problem using Facebook Places every now and then, since I've vetted those that are my friends there, but there aren't too many on a regular basis that I do use other than that. How about you, any qualms about using these services and letting the 'Net know where you are?

Facebook's New Location Feature

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.insanely-great.com/news....nely+Great+Mac)

"Fans of Gowalla and Foursquare may be interested to know Facebook has directly integrated a new location feature. The feature is now available with 3.2 of the app, which hit iTunes overnight."

This is a US only supported feature on the iPhone, but they also have it ready as an HTML5 web site. I personally didn't get into FourSquare too much, and I tried Loopt, but found I preferred to update via Facebook and Twitter. I think I may get more use out of this feature since most, if not all of my friends, are on Facebook, but very few use the other location based services. How about you? Is this something you are going to use on a regular basis?

Pssssst! Apple Knows Where You Are, and So Do Your Apps!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 05:15 PM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-2...subj=News-Apple

"Apple updated its privacy policy to underscore that when you use location-based services on your iOS device, Apple will be sharing your location with that service."

Some of the posts I read about this took the angle of "Oh No! Big Brother!" but it isn't as insidious as that. In order to use some of the location based apps, Apple shares your geographic location, thus they changed privacy policy to read:

"To provide location-based services on Apple products, Apple and our partners and licensees may collect, use, and share precise location data, including the real-time geographic location of your Apple computer or device. This location data is collected anonymously in a form that does not personally identify you and is used by Apple and our partners and licensees to provide and improve location-based products and services. For example, we may share geographic location with application providers when you opt in to their location services."

First off you have to opt in, and secondly, it's anonymous. Seems like much ado about nothing. Or have you read something else more sinister? What are your thoughts?

Best Buy Will Also Sell iPads on April 3rd

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._locations.html

"Apple on Monday announced that the iPad will go on sale this Saturday, April 3, at all of its 221 U.S. Apple retail locations, as well as "most" Best Buy stores. 'iPad connects users with their apps and content in a far more intimate and fun way than ever before,' Apple CEO Steve Jobs said in a press release. 'We can't wait for users to get their hands and fingers on it this weekend.'"

If you go to an Apple Store, you get some hands on treatment with employees helping you set up your iPad as well as some sessions you can attend that will help you get the most out of your iPad. But if you haven't reserved one for pickup at your nearest Apple Store, then this is a good option. There are 675 or so Best Buy stores that sell Apple products so you have plenty of choices.

Google Latitude Announces Changes

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 11:00 AM

http://mashable.com/2009/11/10/goog...itude-features/

"One of the hottest trends right now is the rise of location-based services (LBS), which helps friends network and find each other based on their location. Foursquare and Loopt are prime examples of these growing networks."

And now Google is getting involved, but contrary to the commercial, they don't have an app for that. However it does work with Google maps via the web browser. Or to make it easy you can get the Google app and access it there. I'm thinking since most of my friends have a Gmail account, this may be a good option for me. What are your thoughts? Have you given this a try yet? Are you?

Yelp 3.0 With Augmented Reality

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.iphonealley.com/news/yel...ity-easter-egg?

"Yelp is a free service for finding information and customer reviews on local businesses like bars and restaurants by searching or using location services."

And as of the end of last week, they have updated the app to version 3.0. This actually is a handy app if you can get the right group of users on your friends list, people that actually review the businesses. Surprisingly enough, even in an area like mine I have found at least 6 or so people that are pretty prolific, so I get some good info. And for iPhone 3GS users, it has a newly added "augmented reality" feature using a button called a "monacle" that overlays local businesses on your iPhone screen based on your location. I have yet to get this feature to work on mine however.

iPhone is Boon for Location Apps and Companies

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 12:00 PM

http://gigaom.com/2009/04/27/iphone...based-services/

"Nearly two years ago, I outlined five reasons Apple's iPhone will change the wireless business, the foremost being increased web usage on mobile phones. I should have added another item to that list: catalysing location-based services and applications that use geolocation data to enhance their functionality. One company that's benefiting from this trend is Boston-based Skyhook Wireless. The 6-year-old company got a big boost when Apple decided to include its core technology in the iPhone platform."

Skyhook is a company sells location data it obtains by using GPS, Wi-Fi and cell towers. It sells this data to a variety of mobile device companies but it really took off when Apple included it's core technology in the iPhone platform. Hitching your wagon to Apple seems to pay off in a big way for a number of companies that you never really hear about. It sounds like it has also been a jump start for an increasing number of developers that develop location based applications. It will be interesting to see how Skyhook does in the coming year or two though, Google has jumped into the fray and is offering similar services for free.
