Photos of Apple Store in Amsterdam

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 10:00 AM

http://9to5mac.com/2012/03/01/full-...e+Intelligence)

"We already knew that Apple would officially open the doors to a new flagship retail location on the ground floor and mezzanine of the Hirsch building at the Leidseplein in Amsterdam."

But little did they know it would be so beautiful! And with room enough for 300 employees to take care of the needs of the customers, in 14 languages no less. Great series of photos of the new store that opened Saturday.

Pasadena Apple Store Re-Opens Tomorrow at 10am

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 06:20 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2012/02/01/appl...g-this-weekend/

"I just got notice from Apple that the store in the Old Pasadena retail district is re-opening this weekend, after an almost yearlong expansion project."

Among the changes is a second level so this is quite the remodel job. As is typical in store openings, the first 1,000 customers will get a commemorative t-shirt.

Apple Retail, A Look Back as Well as a Look Forward

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ple_retail.html

"Apple celebrated three ten year anniversaries in 2011, making this year its first full year in its second decade of Mac OS X development, iPod devices and iTunes, and its retail operations, even as the company takes on new business categories ranging from iAd to iCloud to Siri. Here's a look at where the company is headed for its next decade of retail operations."

Interesting history lesson, as well as some insight into what the future might hold for Apple retail as we progress through 2012 and beyond. What are your thoughts on where you see Apple going with their retail operations?

Check Yourself Out at the Apple Retail Store

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 04:00 AM

http://whowritesforyou.com/2011/12/...-self-checkout/

"The Apple Store is always busy, but this time of year it's packed."

And for that reason the author tried out his handy Apple Store app and checked himself out without having to wait through the lines of shoppers. A simple feat to be sure, but one that has a profound impact on the shopping experience. It is things like this that keep me as an Apple customer. What are your thoughts?

The Four Keys to Apple's Success

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 04:40 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/11/21/appl...ples-of-succes/

"Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of iPod, iPhone, and iOS product marketing, shared four keys to Apple's success at a recent event titled 'Silicon Valley Comes to Cambridge.'"

You can read the Wall Street Journal story here but it basically it boils down to focus, simplicity, courage and best. This comes from someone with 20 years experience at Apple, and who has been involved in their marketing so I'm pretty sure he has a good idea on what fuels the success at Apple.

Sorry Educators, Apple Says "No More Boxes!"

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 01:00 AM

http://9to5mac.com/2011/09/29/apple...-school-stores/

"Apple is telling its educational resellers not to expect any more packaged software in the future, ZDNet reports. This includes boxed copies of Mac OS X, iLife, iWork, Apple Remote Desktop and Aperture. Each of these programs has been available on the Mac App Store for months."

Not a big surprise, since Apple has done this for the regular consumer. Logic Express and Logic Studio will still be available but that is about it. It really makes sense though, distributing this stuff digitally. Saves money and that gets passed on to the consumer in lower prices. Or at least that is the theory.

Apple Opens Several Stores This Weekend Internationally

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 01:00 AM

http://www.ifoapplestore.com/db/201...eekend-planned/

"Apple has once again scheduled an international weekend of retail store grand openings, with locations in Italy, Germany and the United States, and with a hint of a store opening in a fourth country."

This will be a busy weekend, since Bologna, Hamburg and El Paso all have retail stores opening. Added to the list is the Braehead UK store so four in all.

Apple Moves Up 13 Spots on Largest Retail Chain List

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 12:27 PM

http://www.ifoapplestore.com/db/201...annual-ranking/

"Among an industry list of the 100 largest U.S. retail chains, there were few changes at the top-except for Apple."

Last year 57th place. This year? 34th with $9.82 billion in revenues, and Walmart still reigns supreme at number one with $418 billion. Yes, $418 billion in revenues. The top 20 companies don't change much according to Chain Store Age Magazine, the keeper of the list. You can download the full survey here, and it lists the 100 companies as well as details about each one.

What About a Goat in an Apple Store? Sure!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Talk" @ 03:00 PM

http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/26/thin...t=Google+Reader

"You can do just about anything in an Apple Store and the employees don't seem to mind."

The certainly don't, since he brought in everything from a trumpet player to a goat. No problem. You can view the video here. I can't decide if it's stupid or entertaining. Perhaps it's a little of both?

Apple Ranks 21st on Largest Retailers List

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 02:30 PM

http://www.macrumors.com/2011/07/01...tailer-in-2010/

"In its annual ranking of the largest retailers by U.S. sales, the National Retail Federation has pegged Apple in 21st place in 2010 with over $18 billion in sales between its retail and iTunes stores (via The Next Web)."

Retail sales that showed 32.3% growth from 2010 (Amazon was 46.2%) pushed Apple into the 21st spot on the list, which is a bump of 32 spots from last year's list.

At Least This Apple Store Was Prepared for the Rapture

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 06:41 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/this-apple...w+(Cult+of+Mac)

"If anyone was going to ascend naked directly into heaven as beings made entirely out of light, it's the guys who work for Apple, and while it may not have happened on May 21st as it was supposed to, at least one Apple Store prepared for the Rapture."

The good thing is this is easily modified so they will be ready for October. As a side note, I find it pleasantly surprising that they rotate through various positions, which would tend to keep their skill set well rounded.

Happy 10th Anniversary Apple Retail Stores

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile...th-anniversary/

"Apple opened its first two retail stores ten years ago today, with two locations in Glendale, California, and McClean, Virginia. At the time, most industry watchers-myself included-thought Apple's venture into retailing was a poor choice: why should the company pay for premium space in upscale shopping centers when it commanded only a minuscule portion of the PC market-and particularly when computer makers like Gateway were painfully discovering that making computers and selling computers in a store were completely different things?"

It sounds like those consultants that Apple hired early on to determine the mistakes Gateway made paid off. The retail stores for Apple have been a big hit and quite the showcase for the products from Apple. I love going to the Apple Store as the experience is like none other. Well, Starbucks is a pretty good experience too, I guess top notch customer service pays off.

Grand Opening of Dresden, Germany Apple Store Tomorrow Morning

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 02:21 PM

http://www.macnn.com/articles/11/03...pe.with.ipad.2/

"A grand opening for the first Dresden, Germany Apple Store is scheduled for this Thursday, Apple has announced. The shop is located at the Altmarkt-Galerie, and on Thursday will be open for extended hours of 8AM to 10PM. Similar extensions are planned for Friday and Saturday; Friday hours will run from 9:30AM to 10PM, while Saturday hours will stretch from 9:30AM to midnight."

That is in about 8 hours as of the posting of this story, so if you are in Dresden, best head on down and get in line if you want one of the T-shirts they usually give out! Here is the page at Apple's website, and here is the story at macnews.de that should give you all the information you need. As long as you can read German.

Apple Stores Open early Tuesday for More iPad 2 Sales?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:50 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/apple-stor...ent-of-ipad-2s/

"Want to grab an iPad 2 but didn't manage to get one over the weekend? Word on the street has it that Apple will be opening its Retail Stores one hour early on Tuesday to sell people a new shipment of iPad 2s."

This is obviously a rumor, and while we don't normally report on rumors, I think its a good idea to at least have a heads up on this since history has shown they do open early for this type of thing. Of course the only way to know is by showing up early and seeing if you can get in, unless you are able to get some kind hearted Apple employee to divulge this over the phone today. Stranger things have happened yes?

What Goes on Inside Apple Retail?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Talk" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/02/17/appl...ke-to-work-the/

"Although doing so usually ends with a current employee becoming a former employee, one Apple Store retail worker recently had a lot to say about his experience working for the company."

So they are kept in the dark until the keynote address just like the rest of us? I don't find that too surprising, I'd be more surprised if they knew in advance to be honest. But the article is an interesting one with some insight into the inner workings of the retail side of things at Apple, and you can read it at Popular Mechanics.

Grand Central Terminal to Get Apple Store

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/confirmed-...ntral-terminal/

"Apple will be building a massive store in New York's Grand Central Terminal, we have independently confirmed. The store will open in the fall, likely early September - and it will be Apple's largest retail space in the world."

And it shall be named Apple Store Grand Central, according to one of those unnamed sources you frequently hear about. This year is the 10th anniversary of the retail operations at Apple so it seems logical they would want to make an impact. This store is supposed to be the largest store yet, surpassing the Covent Garden Store in London. That store has 16,732 square feet open to the public. They certainly will have the foot traffic since the terminal has over 700,000 visitors per day.

Apple Scores High in E-Retail Satisfaction Index

Posted by Joe Johaneman in "Apple Talk" @ 07:00 AM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-20026806-93.html

"Among the online businesses tracked in ForeSee's E-Retail Satisfaction Index (U.S. Holiday Edition), Amazon, Netflix, QVC.com, Avon.com, LLBean.com, Newegg.com, and Apple.com were highest in customer satisfaction, each scoring 82 or more. Some computer and electronics retailers and mass merchants saw lower scores from 2009, contributing to the 1 percent overall drop. But a dozen sites altogether took home scores of 80 or higher."

I've dealt with a few different online retailers this year, and my experiences with Apple.com, Amazon.com and Netflix.com have always been stellar, so this isn't really a surprise to me. I was surprised with Newegg's score, but I haven't dealt with them at all this year. Were you surprised by these numbers? Do you agree or disagree with the ratings that some of these retailers got?

Personal Shopping Ends at Apple Retail Stores, Sort Of...

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.ifoapplestore.com/db/201...vice-in-stores/

"As part of the expected rush of holiday shoppers, and a change in philosophy on serving customers, Apple has quietly ended its free Personal Shopping service that provided appointment-based product demonstrations and selection assistance."

I never had the chance to use this service, or saw the need in my circumstances, but I can see the need for new Mac owners. So even though this particular service is gone, they are still providing personal service. The philosophy at the retail stores changed a bit, so that now they don't believe there is a need for the one-on-one by appointment, because every customer deserves to have the personal service. Now all customers will get as much personal attention as they need to get the information they want, with no obligation to buy. I like the new philosophy, what are your thoughts?

St. Louis Galleria Apple Store Opens Tomorrow at 9am

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Events" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.ifoapplestore.com/db/201...ay-is-saturday/

"Visitors to the St. Louis Galleria (Mo.) Apple store this Saturday will find a new space at a new location, offering about four times the display and service area of the mini-store that opened at the mall in 2004."

This was a move by Apple from their mini-store into the new 6,000 square foot space. They have an on-going project apparently to convert the original nine mini-stores to the full-size version. This one is going to be the largest mall-based store that Apple has, at least to this point in the expansion of the empire. First 1,000 customers, when the doors open at 9am, will be given the usual t-shirt. You can find out more about the store at the store page on Apple's site.
