itunes 9.0.2 Update

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...ackground_opti/

"Apple updated iTunes to version 9.0.2 Thursday, up update that, 'adds support for Apple TV software version 3.0, adds an option for a dark background for Grid View, and improves support for accessibility.'"

This update also does something else: breaks the Palm Pre syncing ability.

Palm at Fault?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/09/23/usb-...plaining-to-do/

"Didn't you hate it when you were a kid, and you would complain to an adult about something one of your siblings was doing, just to end up getting yourself in more trouble than they ended up in? Well, you might say that's exactly what is happening to Palm and their ongoing dispute with Apple over the Pre's ability to sync with iTunes."

So Palm files a complaint with the USB-IF (USB Implementers Forum) about Apple "violating the letter and spirit of the USB-IF Membership Agreement" and the USB-IF appears to be taking the side of.... wait for it ..... Apple. In fact the USB-IF is hinting that Palm may be in violation of the agreement instead! Interesting.

iTunes 9 Breaks Palm Pre Sync

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...m_pre_sync.html

"The tug of war between Apple and Palm continues, as the latest update to iTunes has once again blocked the Palm Pre from syncing with a users' iTunes library."

The latest salvo in this war, that has been going on since July. I'm sure Palm will come up with an update to fix this soon and then the ball will be in Apple's court.

In related news, the iPhone Software 3.1 also breaks unlocked iPhones, so as with every iPhone update, those that are living in the unlocked world strongly suggest not updating. What a pain. Is it even worth it to those of you that have an unlocked iPhone to not be able to get the new features? It wouldn't for me, I appreciate simple.

No Shocker, iTunes Update 8.2.1 Breaks Palm Hack

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:00 AM

http://feeds.arstechnica.com/~r/ars...es-palm-pre.ars

"Apple has released a small point update to iTunes. File it under "saw it coming a mile away," the update breaks compatibility with Palm's "MediaSync" hack."

The update, released yesterday, breaks the MediaSync feature in the Palm Pre that allowed the device to register and sync non-DRM songs and videos with iTunes. According to the Apple update page, the update "iTunes 8.2.1 provides a number of important bug fixes and addresses an issue with verification of Apple devices." Of course you can always choose not to upgrade and it will still work, and I have yet to find out what this update does other than break the hack so I'm not sure if there are benefits to the update. So if you have a Palm Pre, best to keep your current iTunes version if you use MediaSync.

Palm Pre Still Syncs With iTunes After 8.2 Update

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 01:00 PM

http://gizmodo.com/5276263/dont-wor...-with-itunes-82

"An anonymous tipster just confirmed to us that the Pre iTunes sync continues to work with iTunes 8.2 (as it did with iTunes 8.2 beta for the iPhone 3.0 beta). The reader says that there's no worry (yet) that Apple's locking out the phone, and that iTunes continues to recognize the Pre as an iPod."

I gratuitously swiped the graphic from Gizmodo because it cracked me up! Anyway, I have to wonder how long Apple is going to allow this, if they're never going to stop it, or if it's just going to be the kind of cat and mouse game we saw with Sony and the PSP hackers. Personally, I think Apple should just leave it alone and make a huge deal out of how of all the things the Pre could sync with, they did some slick trickery to make it work with iTunes. Says a lot for who the standard bearer for people's music collection is, love it or hate it.

Palm Releases Talking Points on Pre

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Talk" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.precentral.net/internal-...-out-right-here

"Curious to know what Sprint is telling their own about the Palm Pre? Come on in and take a look from this leaked PDF sent in to us by a couple of very friendly tipsters. There's very little you don't already know if you're a Pre-fanatic (including what plans work, Exchange suport, etc)."

The "talking points" comparisons are always interesting if not a little skewed. You probably can't read this in their graphic (so you have to go register; I don't want to direct link their big scoop... It isn't nice!) but there are some real gems in this comparison. Amongst the killer features and ways the Pre "smokes" the competition are NASCAR content, live TV, and a camera flash (which I'm sure isn't just a pure-white LED and is a real Xenon flash like on the Nokia N85).

Wow. You had to dig that deep to find advantages, Palm? Scary...

I hope Palm isn't too much of a victim of a completely incompetent launch. Between Sprint not knowing what makes it attractive and Palm having "trouble" supplying enough Pres for a good nationwide launch... Well... I'm not holding out a ton of hope. This isn't going to be an iPhone launch, folks.

Palm Pre Debut on June 6th At $200

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Talk" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.palm.com/us/products/phones/pre/

Smart move releasing it before WWDC 2009. Not so smart move making the price contingent on a rebate, although we all know how rebates go, right?

So what's the deal, folks? You rushing out for this one?

Palm's Revenue Collapses

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Talk" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.reuters.com/article/mark...20090319?rpc=44

"Palm Inc (PALM.O) on Thursday said its upcoming Pre phone needs "more polishing" but that it was on track to start selling the high profit device in the first half of the year as it looks to grab back smartphone business from rivals. The company gave the update while it reported a wider loss and revenue that fell 70 percent from a year ago, in line with its recent warning for a weak fiscal third quarter. Its shares fell 4.7 percent after the report as some investors may have hoped for a specific launch date for Pre. The Pre is seen as Palm's best hope to fight rivals such as Apple Inc (AAPL.O) and Research In Motion (RIM.TO), which have hurt Palm's smartphone sales in recent years. It said it is working hard to have Pre ready for a launch before the middle of the year at its exclusive U.S. carrier partner Sprint Nextel (S.N). "There's no showstoppers," said Chief Executive Ed Colligan in a call with analysts. "We plan on delivering on the time frame we said we would."

My apologies for the long quote, but I wanted you all to get a perspective on the kinds of issues Palm is facing because they announced the Pre so far ahead of when it would actually be ready for launch. I have serious doubts, considering how Palm has continued to falter in recent weeks financially, that even the Pre can drag them up out of the basement. It's being launched only on one carrier that has exclusivity, mediocre coverage outside of major metro areas, and a history of awful customer service. That's a lot of pressure.

And before you compare that launch situation to the iPhone's in 2007, remember that the iPhone wasn't necessarily the future of Apple, and if the iPhone failed, Apple was in no danger of going out of business. The Pre? Well, I think that's a different story altogether.

Palm Aims To Calm Controversy By Loudmouthed McNamee

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Talk" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.palminfocenter.com/news/...mee-interviews/

"In a rather unusual SEC filling, Palm has composed a free writing prospectus on the subject of Roger McNamee's recent Bloomberg TV interview and subsequent article. The SEC document includes ten itemized "Clarifications and Corrections" about remarks made by Mr. McNamee from everything from Palm Pre functionality, comparisons with competing products and various market statistics."

We covered McNamee's comments last week, and frankly, it's hysterical seeing Palm come out themselves and contradict them. In total, Palm "clarified" ten different remarks made by McNamee about the upcoming Palm that brought the expectations more in line with that interesting thing we call reality.

When Delusion Meets Hyperbole

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?...id=aLU.GjaZD9Ao

"March 5 (Bloomberg) -- Palm Inc.’s new Pre smart phone will lure customers away from Apple Inc.’s iPhone when subscribers’ contracts start expiring in June, Palm investor Roger McNamee said. “You know the beautiful thing: June 29, 2009, is the two- year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone,” McNamee said today in an interview in San Francisco. “Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later.” Sprint Nextel Corp., the phone’s exclusive carrier, and Palm have said they will start selling the device in the first half of the year. Palm, which pioneered mobile devices with its Pilot products more than a decade ago, is counting on the Pre to help reverse six straight quarters of losses totaling more than $650 million."

Don't worry, Roger. We'll be checking back in with you come June. I don't envision lines around the block at the Sprint Store, though.

There's a name for these kind of hyperbolic baiting quotes in sports. "Bulletin board material."

Palm CEO Says "We Can Get Along" with Apple

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.ipodobserver.com/ipo/art...tle_with_apple/

"Palm CEO Ed Colligan says that despite the posturing from his company and Apple, there aren't any pending legal actions over patents. Apple CFO and acting CEO Tim Cook stated that his company will aggressively defend its patents, which many saw as a warning shot at Palm and its upcoming Pre smartphone."

According to the Palm CEO they are comfortable that Palm could "hold its own" in a lawsuit from Apple, but that they have always been respectful of other companies property. He further states they are focusing on their business and not what anyone else may or may not do, and has seen "nothing to date" that would indicate a lawsuit from Apple. Of course that is just because they haven't released the product yet, who knows what will happen once it is out there.

Palm's Pre May Finally Be Legitimate Competition

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 08:00 AM

I remember it very clearly. It was January 2007, and I was sitting in my office furiously refreshing the page on my work computer reading the liveblogging that was going on. It was finally here; Steve Jobs was announcing the iPhone. It was a device thousands upon thousands of loyal Apple customers were dying for. A phone designed to work with their platform, not hacked to "function" with it. Out of the box, it was designed to sync our contacts and calendar, give us e-mail that was better than anything else on the market, and a web experience that no one on the market could match. I'll never forget how my mind boggled that day, and I haven't felt that way about a product announcement since then. Today, however, I think another company has finally done something that I never thought I would see: developed a competitor to the iPhone that could take a bite out of the iPhone, and surprise of surprises, it's Palm.
