Telstra Finally Offers Visual Voice Mail...For a Price

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 04:00 AM

"Two and a half years after much of the rest of the world got access to the visual voicemail feature used on Apple's iPhone range, and a year and half after the service hit Vodafone locally, Telstra has implemented the option, announcing this morning that it would charge customers $5 per month for the privilege of using it."

$5 per month to use visual voice mail, after waiting two and a half years for the privilege? If I was a Telstra customer I think I would be slightly peeved at this announcement. Just like I'm peeved with charging me for the "privilege" of tethering my iPhone. Ridiculous, especially since rival Vodafone has been offering their visual voicemail for free... for two years!

Telstra Dropping Unlock Charge

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 04:00 AM

http://www.itwire.com/your-it-news/...ck-fee-now-free

"In a sign that Telstra might actually be a little serious this time about the noises it repeats every few years about 'finally' wanting to truly get 'customer service right', Telstra has announced it is dropping its previously expensive $150 unlock charge to the much wallet-friendlier price of $0."

So what they were charging, for the ability to take out your microSIM and put in another microSIM of the country you were planning to visit, was a hefty $150.00 USD unlock fee. Basically, Telstra locked down all iPhones purchased through them so you couldn't use it on any other network without paying this fee, so now they have back peddled and are now going to allow you the option for free. I have no experience in doing this as I haven't been outside the US in a long time, but I'm curious how many of our readers have had to go through this. Regardless of the country you are in, please post a reply and how you deal with travels outside your home country when you need to have cell service.

iPad Data Plan From Australia's Telstra and UK's Orange

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.itwire.com/your-it-news/...-deals-detailed

"As iPad fever grips the nation, Telstra today announced it will offer dedicated data plans for the iPad 3G in Australia."

And if you activate your "kit" by the 30th of June, 2010, you get an additional 2GB of data. The pricing is a bit different from what we have here in the US, which is $14.99USD for 250MB of data on the basic plan and $29.99 USD for unlimited data plan. Another company on the international front that has announced data plans for the iPad is Orange UK. Their announcement has their basic plan at £12.50 and their unlimited at about £40 per month. In comparison, if they priced the same plans for basic and unlimited as AT&T is in the US, their plans would cost respectively £10 and £20 per month.

Telstra Enables Tethering in Australia

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 12:00 PM

"You remember this classic Men At Work song, right? 'I come from a land down under, where iPhone tethering is finally available.'"

Wow, he reached back for that song, all the way to 1981! Getting back to current events, according to APC, Telstra has enabled iPhone tethering in Australia. What say you AT&T? Insert cricket noises here.
