iPhone Catches Fire on Flight

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:30 PM

http://www.appletell.com/technology...etell+Appletell

"On November 25th, a Regional Express flight from Lismore to Sydney in Australia had an unusual occurrence after landing when a passenger's iPhone started emitting a significant amount of dense smoke and glowing red."

This certainly is scary! Hopefully just an isolated incident thankfully, but I certainly wouldn't like to see this happening, especially on a flight! I'm curious as to what temperature it did reach since it really did a number on this iPhone.

UPDATE: Apparently this isn't an isolated as another report in from Brazil on the same issue.

iPhone Takes the Lead in Australia

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/06/27/appl...p-mobile-brand/

"There are a lot of iPhones in Australia, and IDC reports today that the number has grown enough to make the iPhone the top smartphone 'down under.'"

40% market share is certainly a large chunk, and in Australia's smartphone market it puts Apple's iPhone in the lead. Back 10% in second place is Android and Symbian drops to third with 22%. When it comes to mobile traffic, the triple team of iPad, iPhone and iPod touch obliterates the competition with a commanding 50% while Android devices are at 10.5% of all mobile traffic. So even though Android is nipping at the iPhone's heels, Apple products clearly area a favorite with the folks in Australia.

If You Live in Australia, Big W Has a Deal For You on "Old" iPads

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.itwire.com/your-it-news/...ds-nobody-wants

"Want to save more than $200 on the cost of original iPads when compared to original iPad pricing? Big W's big clearance paves the way for the now more expensive iPad 2, due March 11 in the US, and March 25 in Australia."

Pretty good deal if you want one of the original iPads. And if you don't need the cameras, the original is still a great device.

The Daily, Now Available in Australia

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.itwire.com/your-it-news/...able-down-under

"If you've been hankering to get a gander at Rupert Murdoch's new iPad-only electronic newspaper, and haven't wanted to stuff around creating a free US iTunes account, good news - you can now get your official dose of The Daily, down under."

Now you don't have to have a US iTunes account to get The Daily, at least if you are living in Australia. And lest you be worried there may not be enough Australian content for you, it still comes with the two week free viewing period to help you decide.

Disaster Looming, Let's Call It TimeGate!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 08:00 AM

http://gizmodo.com/5659087/if-you-h.../full+(Gizmodo)

"Heads up, iPhone users! Last week Australians found a bug in Apple's iOS the hard way. Or maybe the soft way: They overslept as their iPhone alarms failed to go off because of a glitch triggered by daylight saving time."

Since every problem with Apple seems to have a "gate" added to it, I figured this was no different. But this is good to know, especially if you are like me and use your iPhone for your alarm clock. The good news is that it appears Apple is working on the problem so hopefully before the end of October we will have a fix for this problem.

"Apple will open its newest retail store in Australia on Thursday morning, inside the Castle Towers Shopping Centre in the far northwest suburbs of Sydney."

This is the fourth one in the Sydney area, ninth total in Australia, and it opens at 5pm Thursday.

Vodafone Australia Announces Unlimited Data Plans for iPad

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/05/26/voda...plan-for-ipads/

"There's good news for iPad customers in Australia. Vodafone announced today that they will offer an unlimited data plan for the iPad 3G. Here's the deal: For AUS$49.95 (approximately US$41 as of this writing) per month, users can enjoy unlimited data. Not bad!"

Touted as the "first unlimited data plan for the iPad" and with an interesting twist to it. They are offering 6GB data option for $100.00 AUS that expires in 90 days, and a 12GB option for $150.00 AUS that expires in 365 days. Not sure I've seen that before, but I could just be suffering from memory loss.

iPad Data Plan From Australia's Telstra and UK's Orange

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.itwire.com/your-it-news/...-deals-detailed

"As iPad fever grips the nation, Telstra today announced it will offer dedicated data plans for the iPad 3G in Australia."

And if you activate your "kit" by the 30th of June, 2010, you get an additional 2GB of data. The pricing is a bit different from what we have here in the US, which is $14.99USD for 250MB of data on the basic plan and $29.99 USD for unlimited data plan. Another company on the international front that has announced data plans for the iPad is Orange UK. Their announcement has their basic plan at £12.50 and their unlimited at about £40 per month. In comparison, if they priced the same plans for basic and unlimited as AT&T is in the US, their plans would cost respectively £10 and £20 per month.

An Apple or Another Piece of Fresh Produce?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.theage.com.au/business/a...91005-ghzr.html

"WOOLWORTHS insists its new logo is a stylised ''W'' or a piece of fresh produce. Apple thinks it is an apple, and the California-based technology company wants to stop Australia's largest retailer from using it."

A "W" or a piece of fresh "produce?" Um, yea, well the fresh produce certainly looks like what we refer to in orchard country as an apple. I thought the quote from the designer of the logo, Hans Hulsbosch, was rather humorous: "Based on this logic, they would have to take action against every fruit seller" when referring to the Apple complaint. Well Hans, only if other fruit sellers also sold electronics.

Hey Australia, Here is Another Store For You!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...toria_may_23rd/

"Apple announced Monday the opening of a new Apple Store in Doncaster, Victoria, in Australia. This marks the fifth Apple Store in Australia, and the second in the state of Victoria. The grand opening will be held this Saturday, May 23rd, 2009."

Only 4 days left to make plans! While I wouldn't plan a vacation around an Apple Store opening, I'd probably go if I was in the area. The store, if you are interested in going, is located in the Westfield Doncaster shopping center and the doors open at 9am local time.
