Best iOS Calendar Alternative, Agenda, Updated

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.imore.com/2012/06/05/age...ne-ipad-review/

"Agenda is a beautiful alternative to the iPhone and iPad's built-in Calendar app by the great folks at App Savvy."

This really is a great calendar app, much better than the calendar app that comes with the iPhone. I don't switch out of using too many of the apps that come with iOS, but for calendar I made the switch to Agenda and haven't looked back. It's very clean looking and makes finding information easy. But don't take my word for it, you can read the iMore review here, or visit The Brooks Review and check out his opinion on it.

LinkedIn Version 3.0 for iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 11:00 AM

http://9to5mac.com/linkedin_3_iphone_ships_30250

"Good news if you're an iPhone-wielding member of ‘Facebook for suits' service, LinkedIn, as the pro-focused social network has introduced version 3.0 of its iPhone application, seemingly borrowing some of the look and feel of the Facebook app for the same platform."

This is a free app, and has several new features with this version. Data exchange via Bluetooth when you are in the same place with one of your contacts, more options for navigating the various features and an expanded search function so you can also search outside of your connections for business contacts. If you use LinkedIn, you can also join their iPhone group here.

AppleTV 3.0

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._interface.html

"Apple on Thursday introduced its new Apple TV 3.0 software, which features a redesigned main menu that makes navigating content simpler and faster, the company says."

Free update, improves photo interface, and also allows you to listen to your genius mixes and watch iTunes Extras and LPs. You can also listen to Internet radio. I like the new interface, but I sure wish they would do something more with this device.

iPhone 3.0 and Wi-Fi Problems

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 03:00 PM

http://www.theiphoneblog.com/2009/0...-wifi-problems/

"Back when iPhone 3.0 launched, we heard Wi-Fi was giving problems to some - primarily iPod touch - users. Various network resets or OS restores seem to have quieted that down, but now TUAW is reporting that the newly launched iPhone 3GS might be suffering Wi-Fi troubles as well."

It's no secret that Wi-Fi is, at best, flawed, in OS 3.0. My 3GS and 3G both have weaker signals than before. I'm not talking about one or two bars, either. I'm talking standing on top of the router and seeing one bar of signal strength and being in the bedroom (the other side of my apartment) and dropping down to one bar when I used to have a full signal. It never drops to 3G, though, which I find interesting.

I'll be curious to see if this is fixed in 3.1 (or 3.01) along with the battery drain issues others have been reporting.

Need Some Help With 3.0?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/141...l_mwnws_h_crawl

"About halfway through writing the enormous tome of an iPhone 3.0 review, I realized that there just wasn't enough room. For every huge new feature, like landscape keyboard, cut-and-paste, etc., it seemed like there were a dozen more smaller improvements and enhancements that cried out for equal attention."

This is a nice compendium of all the different features found with the 3.0 software for the iPhone/iPod Touch. If you want more, you can check out his more complete and "enormous tome." This list is kind of a quick and dirty list of features the author and some readers have supplied, but it's a pretty good list, some obvious and some not so obvious.

Rumor: New iPhone to be "iPhone Video?"

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.businessweek.com/technol...fTheApple/blog/

"While this could be just another rumor, this name would fit perfectly with what a source told me in late April: that Apple would differentiate the new iPhone by making it the first device that makes home movie-making mainstream."

I'm all about this one, if it's true. It goes together nicely with the other rumor about the new iPhone: that it'll have a front-facing chat camera and some sort of video chatting capabilities. I'm not a big video chatter, but I do shoot a lot of video and if the iPhone does it well, it'll be one less thing I have to carry on a day-to-day basis.

Apple to End Endless OTA Downloads? Maybe

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.theiphoneblog.com/2009/0...ad-apps-iphone/

" Looks like Apple's begun charging full price if you try to download an app you've already bought over the iPhone. This did not used to be the case - previously you'd be given a dialog stating you'd already bought it and you could go ahead and re-download it for free. Now the dialog says you can still re-download it for free on your computer (via iTunes), but if you want to download it again directly to your iPhone, you've got to buy it again."

Obviously a side-effect of having the ability to switch accounts, you can't just download the same app over and over again on your iPhone itself. Not all users are having this problem, though, so your mileage may vary, but it's obvious that a change is a-comin'. It's a change I'm not happy with, but at least, for once, I understand it.

New iPhone 3.0 Beta and SDK Reaches Developers

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.macnn.com/articles/09/04....iphone.3.beta/

"Apple has released a third beta of the upcoming iPhone 3.0 operating system, build 7A280f. The company has advised of compatibility issues, although any significant changes to the interface or features will likely be reported after developers have a chance to take a closer look at the OS."

I'm seriously looking forward to the 3.0 software and from the frequency of releases lately, I'm starting to feel like we won't have that long to wait. Of course, I'm also looking forward to the potential for a new iPhone, also, and preferrably one with 32 gigs of storage. 16 just isn't cutting it for me anymore!

Rumor: New iPhone Coming in June

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009...ill-be-hot-son/

"We can’t tell you where or who, but pretty high up in AT&T’s food chain, the following was reported to be said: New iPhone announcement around mid-June (duh) New iPhone will be faster and have a more seamless experience unmatched by any device (could be just talking about 3.0, but we think it’s also a new iPhone) U-Verse iPhone application; will allow control of your home DVR (play, pause, rewind, etc.) The annual iPhone launch is “becoming a tradition.”"

It's not surprising that in the wake of the 3.0 announcement rumors would start swirling about a new version of the phone itself. I'm not sure I buy it, though. They had everyone's attention with the 3.0 announcement. To come out a mere two months later and announce a replacement phone when they easily could've done the same with a captive audience doesn't make sense to me.

Luckily, we won't have to wait long to find out of there really is any meat behind this rumor. June is definitely not that far off!

Rumor: iPhone 3.0 Coming Soon? Maybe...

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ne_in_june.html

"Coverage of Apple's plans to launch the iPhone 3G in the United Arab Emirates later this month appears to also signal a June release date for the handset's successor. On Monday, Emirates Telecommunications - Etisalat said that it had struck the first iPhone deals of 2009 when it announced in a local newspaper plans to bring the iPhone 3G to the UAE and Saudi Arabia (under the Mobily brand) later this month. Mark Davis, Program Director for iPhone at Etisalat, later spoke with Dow Jones and revealed the precise launch date to be February 15th. The same report went on to say that the "next version of the device, which is due out in June, will be launched in the UAE at the same time.""

June? I'll take it. Honestly, I don't feel the urgency for the next version of the iPhone OS that I felt for 2.0, so it isn't pressing to me, but I always like to see new gadgets come along! Anyone else looking forward to the 3.0 release?
