iPad 3, or is it iPad HD? What Else Will Happen Tomorrow?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 10:11 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/150599/mor...called-ipad-hd/

"As I've argued before, there's a good chance the third-gen iPad will be called the "iPad HD." The rumored tablet is expected to feature a pixel-packed Retina display as its flagship feature, and the "HD" suffix could help differentiate it as a newer, higher-quality device."

This does make sense, since something similar happened with the iPhone 4, but the only sure thing is that there is a lot of conjecture about what exactly will happen tomorrow. Apple TV refresh? Also makes sense due to the supply shortages of this wonderful little device. How about an iPad mini? Not so sure about that one, at least for this event. And a new one for today is the interesting hint from Verizon about "Something Big" coming. LTE perhaps? The one rumor that I really hope comes true is a redesigned cover for the latest iPad. I never really liked the smart cover due to the lack of back coverage, but the supposed new cover provides the protection. Whatever is announced, I'm just hoping I'm able to get an upgrade for my iPad original, since polls are showing 74% of current iPad 2 owners are planning on upgrading. What are your thoughts on what will be announced tomorrow?

Apple Event Confirmed for March 7th

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 01:30 PM

http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2...tm_campaign=rss

"Apple has begun to send out invitations for a special media event on Wednesday, March 7 at 10am PST. The event will take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, where both the original iPad and iPad 2 were announced in 2010 and 2011, respectively. The company did not specify what this year's event will be about, but given the invitation pictured above below, it's a near given that Apple will unveil the next-generation iPad."

Rumors confirmed, and from the looks of the not so discreet invite, this must have something to do with an iPad yes? But what else could they be announcing? Could it be a new Apple TV like this article says? I have no idea but I certainly like what this announcement has done to the stock price!

The Next Apple Event, One Week From Today in the Big Apple

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Events" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/apple/big...t=Google+Reader

"On Wednesday Apple sent invitations to the media (including The Loop) to attend an event in New York City next week. The festivities will take place on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 10:00 am ET at the Guggenheim Museum."

Obviously, from the invite, it is going to be about education. But just how far will they go? Software only? Hardware? I'm guessing that it will involve text books (yea, I know, not much of a guess since the theme is education) but I'm going to go with the next version of the iPad also, because you have to put the books on something right? Why not a new iPad? Well, as with any of these, lots of rumor and conjecture, but what are your thoughts on what might be announced?

Thoughts on Yesterday's Apple Event

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Events" @ 12:07 PM

http://live.arstechnica.com/Event/iPhone_5

I finally had a chance last night to watch the keynote (Apple has posted it here), and I wasn't as underwhelmed as the stock market was apparently. At least initially I suppose, as the ending tally resulted in a loss of only around $2.00 USD. Tim Cook will take some getting used to, as he definitely is not Steve Jobs when it comes to the live presentation. The program started out with stats and while the stats were interesting, I, like many of you, wanted them to hurry and get to the meat of the presentation, namely what was new! There were some cool announcements, such as the new iPod Nano clock faces and the Nike + integration update. I really like the new clock faces which, seriously, make me consider buying one of these and one of the watchbands that are now out and on sale. I really think it's cool that Apple saw what was happening and added something to the Nano options so that it's customers would have an improved experience. Also I'm really looking forward to October 12th when I can try out iOS 5 for myself. And of course the iPhone 4S. Initially when I read the news via the blogs that were reporting live, I was a bit underwhelmed. But I knew I needed to see the keynote to get the whole story so I held back on judgement. To be honest, after seeing the upgraded iPhone 4S I am on the fence about upgrading. The main reason is that I don't want to be stalled from upgrading by AT&T when the iPhone 5 comes out. But with that improved camera it may be enough to get me to buy and then see what happens later next year. It wasn't the announcement I was hoping for but it is definitely an improvement over the iPhone 4. So, what are your thoughts on the event from yesterday? Going to go ahead and upgrade or hold off for the iPhone 5?

Finally, An End to the Rumors, the iPhone Event IS October 4th

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 04:35 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/09/27/appl...vent-for-oct-4/

"Jim Dalrymple of The Loop has received an invitation from Apple for a press event to announce the new iPhone. It will occur on October 4 at Apple's campus in Cupertino, starting at 10:00 AM PT."

Indeed! Let's do talk iPhone! Finally we will see if the rumors are true! I'm hoping for something really big with this one, but I'm prepared for something just short of amazing. How about you, what are your thoughts on what this event is going to reveal besides the iOS 5 we have all been waiting for?

WWDC With Steve and the Gang

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2011/05/31wwdc.htm

"Apple® CEO Steve Jobs and a team of Apple executives will kick off the company's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote address on Monday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m."

According to Apple's press release, Steve Jobs will indeed be there at the WWDC 2011, to be held on June 6th 2011. Lots of speculation about what will be presented, from iCloud info to Lion and hardware. What doesn't appear to be in the rumor mill is a new iPhone, with rumors in place that it won't be announced until later in the Fall. What are your thoughts as to what they will present here?

Thoughts on the iPad 2

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/analyst-gi...w+(Cult+of+Mac)

"Reactions are mixed on Apple's iPad 2 announcement. Although the new iPad held some surprises, what most caught the eye of analysts we talked with was that CEO Steve Jobs, out on medical leave, showed up to unveil the next-generation tablet. The announcement "started as an A+ for Steve Jobs presenting and the testosterone contained within the presentation," Giles Nugent, instructor at the SAE Institute, said by e-mail."

I watched the keynote as well (you can too right here at Apple's site), and it was nice to see Jobs up there on stage right where he belongs. But, unlike some analyst's opinions, mine is that the iPad 2 is quite an upgrade from the current version and well worth purchasing. Coming in at 1/3 thinner with twice the processing power, it features a front VGA camera as well as a rear facing camera capable of capturing HD video and 5x zoom for still shots. You can also purchase it with 3G to work with either Verizon or AT&T. And they have done all of this yet can still keep the efficiency of the iPad version 1 as the iPad 2 will offer up to 10 hours of battery life, as well as the month of standby power. And in addition it supports HDMI output and compatibility with iMovie and GarageBand. Lots of improvements and it will sell at the same pricing points as the original iPad. Seems like a winner to me, what are your thoughts?

Apple Media Event Tomorrow, Any Ideas?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Events" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/...t+Hardware+2.0)

"Apple is holding a media event on March 2nd, and it's about the iPad 2 for sure. Get news and analysis as it happens by tuning in to the Hardware 2.0 live coverage event."

I think it's pretty likely the iPad 2 announcement will be part of this event tomorrow, but what else do you think will be announced? Any thoughts?

iPad 2 on March 2nd?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Events" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti..._ipad_expected/

"Apple began sending out invitations to a media event on March 2nd, an invitation that more than hints it will be the expected iPad 2 announcement. The invitation features a iCal-like calendar page with March and "2," along with a tear-away that shows the corner of an iPad underneath."

A not so subtle hint, with the iPad peeking around the corner. The event will be held in San Francisco at 10am Pacific time. And hopefully today we hear about a new lineup of MacBook Pros. Or do you think they will combine it with this event?

Macworld Expo Starts Tomorrow

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Talk" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.hardmac.com/news/2011/01...c+(HardMac.com)

"It was not so long ago that the Mac world was buzzing during this period of the year, especially during the two days of the start of the Macworld Expo."

Granted, since Apple has stopped going it lost some of it's luster but it is still an active event attended by many of the faithful. If you are planning on going, here is also an article on some of the "essential" apps you might find handy, and there is even a Macworld specific app to help guide you around the event. And don't forget to check in at the official Macworld Expo site for more information. Anyone going this year?

"The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Verizon will hold a special event at New York City's Lincoln Center (Frederick P. Rose Hall) on January 11, 2010 - next Tuesday today."

In about one hour, we will know exactly what Verizon is going to announce, although the oddsmakers put this event as a pretty sure thing that it is going to be the Verizon iPhone. There is even talk that Steve Jobs will make an appearance. Well, we shall see at 11:00 am Eastern time so stay tuned!

Win a Lenovo ThinkCentre M90z Worth $1308 USD!

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 02:00 PM

I'm a couple days late getting this contest launched - things have been hectic - but here we go! I have a top-spec Lenovo ThinkCentre M90z to give away to one lucky Thoughts Media reader/YouTube viewer.

Here are the three things you have to do to be entered in this contest:

  1. Subscribe to our YouTube channel
  2. Post a comment on the YouTube contest video telling me how/where you'd use this computer. Don't post the comment here on Digital Home Thoughts though, only on the YouTube video.
  3. Favorite the contest video on YouTube (instructions how are in the video)

That's it! One entry per person, and the contest closes at 5 PM GMT -7 on December 13th, 2010. Good luck everyone - the winner will be chosen randomly from amongst all the comments posted. The winner will be contacted via YouTube direct message, and will have 48 hours to respond back to me to claim their prize. If the winner hasn't fulfilled all three of the requirements above, I'll pick someone else.

Please note: due to shipping constraints, this contest is open to people in North America only. You guys know I always try to do world-wide contests, but this is a physically BIG prize so as you can imagine shipping world-wide would be a bit problematic.

Remember this contest is part of a much bigger contest with 20 other sites, so be sure to check out the other contests that are happening right now!

Help Me Win $1250 for Kids Who Need It This Christmas

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Thoughts Media Off Topic" @ 03:00 PM

Hi everyone! I need your help to win an unboxing contest that Best Buy is running on Facebook, and it’s for a good cause. Since I do a lot of those, I thought hey, why not enter? There are two grand prizes of $2500 CAD each, awarded as Best Buy gift cards. Since we’re coming up on Christmas, sharing the grand prize if I win makes sense – so I’ve publicly committed to donating half of the prize ($1250) to kids involved with Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Canada. My mother works for that organization, and I’ve seen first hand the needs that some of these families have. She works with the in-school mentoring program, which pairs younger kids with senior citizen mentors. Apparently the kids are Nintendo Wii-crazy, and it’s an activity the seniors and kids can do together, so I think what I’ll do is buy as many Nintendo Wii bundles as I can with $1250 (it should be at least five of them).

I'd really appreciate the support of the Thoughts Media community, because - and I'll be blunt here - Twitter is such a noisy medium that every though yesterday the message about this contest went out to over 5000 people from three different people, nearly zero votes came as a result of it. I'm currently #3 in votes, but I could easily take a dominating lead if even 20% of you reading this decided to act. Please help!

Here’s how you can help me, and the kids, win – oh, and enter to win a $150 gift card yourself!

  1. Log into Facebook, and visit the Best Buy Unboxing Day Contest Site. Click Allow when the app asks for your permission. I’ve noticed there’s a weird bug with Internet Explorer 8 where it loops the process for almost a minute, so you may want to use Firefox or Chrome if you run into trouble.
  2. Find my Samsung Focus video (see above) and click on it, then click on Vote in the window that pops up. You’ll need to fill out a little form; if you live outside Canada and don't qualify for the gift card, just put in whatever bogus information you want.
  3. Return to that contest site every day to vote – you can vote once every day up until December 31st.

The winners will be announced January 3rd, 2011, and if I win, I’ll announce it here and provide details and photos of the Wii’s I purchase.

(And for the Windows Phone Thoughts readers, I'll be doing a "real" unboxing of the Focus - that was just a simplified, quick version. I've got some serious concerns about the screen...).

Rumor Mill is Very Active for This Event

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Events" @ 03:00 AM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17852_3-2...subj=News-Apple

"There is a ritual before Apple unveils something new. It's the ritual of rumor, leakage, and misdirection. The rumors about Monday's Apple event suggest that the company is to reveal a new MacBook Air, perhaps a smaller MacBook Air, one that would fit into at least one of the pockets of a Gucci jacket. Well, perhaps."

As is typical as we approach these Apple events, the rumor mill is churning furiously, with pictures posted of possible upgrades as well as predictions on what will be announced. We have two new MacBook Air versions predicted, 13 and 11-inch in size, as well as an upgrade of the 13-inch MacBook Pro to the i5 processor. I think the only "sure thing" is an upgrade to OS X since they have that Lion peeking around from behind the Apple logo, but what are your thoughts on what will be announced tomorrow?
