Apple Edges HP by Almost 5% in Shipping Numbers

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-5...subj=News-Apple

"Apple is out-shipping traditional PC vendors by a wide margin on the back of strong iPad sales, a marketing research firm has found."

And the margin over number 2 HP was almost 5%, as Apple shipped 15 million iPads along with 5 million Macs, which made up 17% of the 120 million total shipped globally in the 4th quarter. HP total was 12.7% in comparison. Overall, if you take the iPad and other tablets out of the picture, PC sales are down 0.4%. Sounds to me like if you aren't in the tablet business, you might have cause for concern.

Set Up iCloud on Your PC

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 11:46 AM

http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/pc.html

"Get iCloud up and running on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC. And learn how to set up Find My iPhone. All it takes is a few easy steps."

Three easy steps, according to this page from Apple on how to set up your PC for iCloud. And they said it was just for Macs. Silly critics.

Switching from a PC to a Mac?

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple Talk" @ 09:00 PM

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,281...,2375426,00.asp

"You've decided to "think different" and become a Mac user. Here are the things to consider and steps to take as you make a big change to your computing lifestyle."

What is promoted as being a no-brainer actually does take some doing. Simply moving files is not quite as simple as moving files between Windows systems (Where did Explorer go?); Applications must be re-purchased for OS X, or equivalent apps found (and Windows apps are still generally cheaper); So how do I get all my Windows iTunes media files to the new system? This article provides a lot of tips, but is a tad simplistic when it comes (for example) to uninstalling files on the Mac. It's not always just dragging files from Applications to Trash. Anyway, if you're thinking of switching, give this a read.

A Switcher's Tale: PC to Mac: Back and Forth

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple Talk" @ 01:00 AM

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/im-s...d-why/2620?pg=1

"It's true. I'm switching to a Mac. Of course, I'll be switching back to a PC shortly after, and then switching back to the Mac sometime later, and then back and forth - switching from Mac to PC and vice versa - for the foreseeable future."

Confirmation of the "use the right tool for the job" mantra. A longtime Microsoft blogger is switching to a Mac, but not abandoning Windows. He claims that "... the goal is to be comfortable enough to move between machines and use the best tools on each one with as little friction as possible." Makes sense to me. This article generated lots and lots of comments, predictably flaming the author from both the Microsoft and Apple camps, interspersed with some discussions on running this type of setup using a shared keyboard and mouse (Synergy software on the PC and on the Mac). An interesting read.

Apple PC Market Share On The Rise

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Desktops" @ 06:03 AM

http://osxdaily.com/2010/10/25/appl...ly+(OS+X+Daily)

"See that graph? That's Apple taking over the world... if you think the iPad counts as a PC that is. The chart represents PC Market Share in the USA (AKA United States of Apple), and includes Apple with and without the iPad counted as a PC. That massive blue leap is Apple with the iPad."

You could argue both sides I suppose, but due to it's limitations I don't really consider the iPad a full-fledged PC. Regardless, you can still see that while everyone else is on the decline, Apple is going up with or without the iPad included in the mix. What are your thoughts? Do you think the iPad should be included in the mix or not?

What Will Ballmer Think Mary-Jo?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 10:01 AM

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/microsoft...-i-love-it/6912

"I bought an iPad. Big deal, you say... So did 3.3 million other people so far this year."

As you can see from the image above, Mary-Jo Foley writes for a column called "All About Microsoft" for ZDNet so yea, I think it's a big deal too Mary-Jo! And not only because she is a PC, but also because it is the first Apple product she has ever purchased. I'm a little disappointed in the reception she received from the Apple Store employee though, you would think that once she told them she was a Windows user they would have bent over backwards to help her navigate through what she needed. Even with that, she pressed on and is still enjoying the iPad. She hits the nail on the head when she writes that she is using it as a "consumption" device rather than a "creation" device, because I think that is really what the iPad is about. How about you? If you have an iPad, are you a consumer or a creator?

Mac Market Share Up to 9.8%

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 08:00 PM

http://www.electronista.com/article...et.share.in.us/

"Second-quarter Mac sales in the US are said to have increased by 24 percent to reach 1.7 million units, outpacing the industry average, according to a report published by Gartner Research."

Apple shipments jumped up .8% from Q109, ending at 9.8% market share, closing the gap with Acer, who dropped to 11.3% from 13.1% for the same period. These figures are also without taking into account iPad sales. So, is the iPad the cannibal or do you think something else is responsible?

Get Your "Get A Mac" Ads Fix All in One Place

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Articles & Resources" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/145...l?lsrc=rss_news

"I'm an unapologetic Apple fanboy, so of course, I'm a fan of the company's long-running "Get a Mac" ad campaign. In fact, I'm so taken with the spots, I've been collecting the commercials since the campaign began four years ago with the intent of one day publishing them altogether once the "Get a Mac" series reached its conclusion."

Ah but AdWeek beat him to it, displaying every single "Get A Mac" ad made since they debuted in May of 2006 on their blog. Yep, all 66 of them. They have them neatly displayed by year, and even left room for expansion so who knows how many more we have coming our way.

Mac Ownership Hits 12% of US Households

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 09:00 AM

http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2...tm_campaign=rss

"Mac ownership is up 33 percent over 2008 among US households, according to the latest NPD survey. Though at least twice as likely to have the latest consumer electronics gear, plenty of Mac users are also using Windows PCs as well."

Macs are now in 12% of US households, up from the 2008 figure of 9%, and in 85% of the households that have Macs they also have PCs. As part of these stats, only about 1.8% of households that have a computer are Mac only. I count myself amongst the 85% group, although we don't use the PC for much other than a few kids games. How about you? Do you have both in your house or are you ?

New Apple Ad Featuring Patrick Warburton

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...c_adoption.html

Apple this week unveiled a new "Get a Mac" ad, entitled "Top of the Line,"featuring actor Patrick Warburton.

I love Warburton's comedic style, this ad is no different.
