Apple Results for Q2 One For Record Books

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 11:55 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...118m_ipads.html

"Apple on Tuesday announced its best-ever second fiscal quarter, as the company saw its earnings rise 94 percent to $11.6 billion, or $12.30 per diluted share, on quarterly revenue of $39.19 billion."

When you compare it to year ago numbers of $24.7 billion revenue and profits of $6.0 billion, it is impressive. And a record 2nd quarter results for Apple. Also impressive was the number of iPhones sold, namely 35.1 million of them which is growth of 88 percent from a year ago. iPad? Also up in numbers with 11.8 million sold, a paltry 151% increase over the same period last year. You can listen to the meeting via Apple, and if you are curious what the analysts thing, have a look here.

AT&T Has Record iPad Sales

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 10:30 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ctivations.html

"AT&T announced on Monday that the launch of the new iPad set a new single-day record for sales and activations of Apple's touchscreen tablet."

In the 24-hour period starting the morning of Friday, March 16, AT&T says it had the best sales period ever for an iPad. They didn't release specific numbers, but Apple confirmed that the new iPad had a record start. I am a bit curious to see the numbers though, to give it a comparison over previous models since it was the biggest launch ever, opening in 10 countries over the weekend.

Apple Edges HP by Almost 5% in Shipping Numbers

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-5...subj=News-Apple

"Apple is out-shipping traditional PC vendors by a wide margin on the back of strong iPad sales, a marketing research firm has found."

And the margin over number 2 HP was almost 5%, as Apple shipped 15 million iPads along with 5 million Macs, which made up 17% of the 120 million total shipped globally in the 4th quarter. HP total was 12.7% in comparison. Overall, if you take the iPad and other tablets out of the picture, PC sales are down 0.4%. Sounds to me like if you aren't in the tablet business, you might have cause for concern.

First Day Sales for OS X Lion? How Does Over One Million Sound?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 01:00 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...n_on_first_day/

"Apple announced Thursday that sales of OS X 10.7 Lion topped the one million mark on Wednesday, the first day of availability. Lion is only available through the Mac App Store, and at US$29.99, that means Apple has added another $30 million to its coffers (you know, because Apple was running short on cash)."

This is the first version of any Mac OS to sell one million copies on it's first day of availability, and I have to venture a guess that having it readily available for download online via the Mac App Store contributed in no small way to this impressive figure. Now we shall see if it can keep up these kinds of numbers, as the previous versions have done (two million in the first three days for Leopard for example.) Did you already download your copy? Any problems if you did?

Apple Sets Record High

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 07:03 PM

http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2011/07...UNE:+Apple+2.0)

"After a five months of jagged ups and downs, AAPL overtakes a record set on Feb. 16, 2011. Investors who stuck with Apple (AAPL) through thick and thin this year got their earthly reward Friday."

Indeed! A couple of days before an earnings report and Apple hits $365.00 USD then drops to settle at $364.92 USD, eclipsing the previous high of $363.13 USD set in February of this year.

Now You Have to Wait Until February 9th to get Your Verizon iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 01:47 PM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...rds_in_2_hours/

"Verizon began accepting pre-orders for Apple's iPhone 4 at 3AM on Thursday, and by 5AM had already broken all of its first full day sales records for a single device. The company processed so many orders that it, along with Apple, stopped accepting new pre-orders before the end of the day."

Well impressive, and it appears without a glitch other than having to shut down the pre-ordering earlier than they expected, but that isn't a bad thing. Well, unless you were hoping to be one of those pre-ordering. At 8:10pm Eastern they shut the operation down, and according to Verizon Wireless President Dan Mead "in our first two hours, we had already sold more phones than any first day launch in our history." Most impressive when you consider it was only open to existing customers and still claimed that record. No details on numbers yet, and I wonder how they will compare on February 9th and 10th when it is open to everyone. If you want to get in on this the online ordering starts at 3am on February 9th, and the stores (Verizon, Apple, Best Buy and Wal-Mart) will open up at 7am on February 10th if you want to brave the lines.

Apple Market Cap Exceeds $300 Billion

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 10:30 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/45660/aapl-m...e+Intelligence)

"Apple remains the world's most valuable company (after Exxon) with a market cap that this morning exceeded $300 billion, reports declare. On active trade on the Dow Apple (AAPL) rose $7 to hit a new record intraday high this morning - right now Apple stock sits near $330 per share for a market cap of over $302 billion."

Well, almost a third of the way towards the recent prediction that Apple would hit $1 trillion. I guess we will see on January 18th how the first fiscal quarter ended up for them.

Apple Stock Sets Another Record

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 11:31 AM

http://www.edibleapple.com/apple-sh...+(Edible+Apple)

"Apple shares today, for the first time in history, broke the $300 barrier. Since August, Apple shares have risen by 25%, with some analysts holding a price target for Apple's stock at levels as high as $400."

The stock is on quite a run, controversies aside. What is your target price for the stock? Think it will hit $400.00 USD?

Apple Using Strong-Arm Tactics?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.9to5mac.com/itunes-amazo...l-apple-3560348

"Ed Christman at Billboard contends that Apple is pressuring the record labels not to deal with Amazon and their Daily Deal, which allows users to purchase the album at a reduced price one day before it is generally released (on iTunes)."

According to the executive, "iTunes representatives have been urging labels to rethink their participation in the Amazon promotion and that they have backed up those warnings by withdrawing marketing support for certain releases featured as Daily Deals." I can't really blame them, and it appears some are listening to Apple as Capitol, Capitol Nashville and Jive all opted out of the Amazon Daily Deal promotion. Wonder how many more will opt out? I'm guessing most if not all, what are your thoughts?
