Restore Data on Your New iPad the Right Way

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/153932/res...-the-right-way/

"Last week, we showed you how to prepare your old iPad for today's upgrade to the new one. Now you have your new device, you'll want to ensure that all of your data from your old one gets transferred over during the setup process. Here's how to do it - the right way."

Apple certainly makes this easy, so wether you use the plug in version of backup or iCloud back up, you will get a prompt when setting it up. Select "Restore From iTunes Backup" and let the magic begin. Make sure, however, that you choose the most recent backup if you are restoring via iTunes.

Wipe Your Old iPhone and Put it to Good Use

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 01:00 AM

http://gigaom.com/apple/how-to-get-...(GigaOM:+Apple)

"Thinking about getting a new iPhone and not sure what to do with the old one? Why not give it to the kids? Basically, what you're really doing is turning the iPhone into an iPod touch that's kid-friendly, which is a great way to put old tech to constructive use."

Since we are supposedly getting information on a new iPhone later today, it's good to know how to wipe your current iPhone clean in case you want to sell it or just give it to your kids to use. Or in case you sell it on eBay, where apparently you can get a pretty good price. Much better, according to this article, than by selling it at another reseller as we mentioned yesterday.

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:20 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/161...html#lsrc.fb_mw

"If you ever need to restore the entire contents of an OS X Lion startup drive, or just perform a reinstall of the OS, you'll find that there are numerous ways to accomplish these tasks. In fact, there are so many permutations, that I began to lose count after awhile. Trying to figure out the best method for your situation can get a bit tricky."

This is a good step-by-step how to on reinstalling Lion should you ever need it. Hopefully you won't, but it never hurts to be prepared does it?

iPad Restore: Someone Please Explain This To Me

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Apple Talk" @ 08:00 AM

I admit it: when it comes to the world of Apple devices, there's still a lot I don't know. Some things make intuitive sense, while others I find baffling. This is the latter. Read more...

Arq Online Backup for Mac Users

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 10:30 PM

http://www.macworld.com/article/153...l?lsrc=rss_main

"There's yet another contender if you're looking for an online backup solution. Haystack Software has released Arq, a backup application that uses Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3). Arq offers encrypted backups, flexible scheduling, and the ability to select and exclude files as you see fit."

Using Amazon's Simple Storage Service (or S3), Arq from Haystack Software offers a convenient way to ensure that your data is backed-up - and more importantly, can be recovered. While Time Machine offers a good, reliable local backup option, Arq is designed to also be a complementary 'disaster recovery' restore solution. Data is backed-up and restored via simple drag-and-drop operations. Multiple versions are stored to allow 'point-in-time' restores, and backups can be encrypted. An Amazon S3 account is required (with somewhat complicated tiered pricing) for storage, and Arq costs $29 for a single-copy, or $49 for a five-user family pack.

Toy Story App Reversal

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/145...l?lsrc=rss_main

"Toy Story Mania arrived at the App Store in October to largely rave reviews, with one of the more enthusiastic ones coming from yours truly. And why not? The game-inspired by a ride at Disney's theme parks-cleverly melds characters from the Toy Story universe with a carnival midway. The game's been a fixture on my iPhone since I finished testing it, so I was thrilled to see an update available for download earlier this week."

Ah but the story doesn't have a happy ending and the author found out it wasn't all that and a bag of chips. So our intrepid but disappointed gamer goes through the steps he took in order to restore an older version that was more to his liking. I've not been so disappointed in an app that I wanted the old version back, but if it ever happens this article lays the process out nicely.

10.5.7 Not For You? Here is How to Go Back

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.macfixit.com./article.ph...090514132546680

"The latest update to Mac OS X includes many enhancements, security fixes, and many people are noticing an overall speed increase, especially on older PowerPC machines. These benefits and the fact that problems, so far, have not been severe, have us recommending this update for most people. Despite this, some people may wish to revert back to the previous OS version."

There have been reports of problems with this update, so if this update isn't quite working out for you, you do have options. This is a short and sweet article, with several options based on your setup, on how to go back to the previous version of your OS. I haven't had to do this in such a long time (knock on wood) and I found it was an interesting article to read and refresh my memory on just what I would need to do to restore a previous version of my operating system.
