What SSD Do You Have?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 02:30 PM

"Several months ago, MacRumors noticed that Apple was using two different suppliers for the Solid State Drives (SSDs) in its MacBook Air models - Samsung and Toshiba. At the time Samsung SSDs benchmarked significantly faster (both in read and write speeds) than the Toshiba SSDs."

I don't think it would matter too much which SSD you have, except for the variation in the speed benchmarks. The disparity isn't just a few MB/s either. Using a 128GB Samsung the test resulted in 246 MB/s write and 264 MB/s read speeds in the 11-inch MBA. However on the 13-inch MBA, using the 128GB Toshiba, they only got 156 MB/s write and 208 MB/s read speeds. Quite a difference. If I were to get one of the slower ones, I'd be tempted to take it back for one with the Samsung in it. You can find out which one you have by going to About Mac -> More Info -> System Report -> and click on the Hardware. Then go to the Serial-ATA section and if the APPLE SSD is followed by SM you have the Samsung. If you have a TS however, you are stuck with the Toshiba. What are your thoughts on the debacle, or is the speed difference really that big of a deal?

OWC MacBook Air 480GB Mercury Aura Pro Express SSD Upgrade

I haven't seen anyone crack open a Macbook Air before - not that I've gone looking for it mind you - but I'm still impressed by the fact that this product is almost all battery and they managed to fit the guts of the laptop in basically 1/4th of the total space. This video shows how surprisingly easy it is to swap out the SSD in the Macbook Air. I had to chuckle though when I saw the price of the 480 GB SDD: a mere $1579.99 USD. I wonder how many dozens of these they'll sell this year? Yikes. SSD prices aren't free-falling like I keep hoping they will...

Replace That Optical Drive With an SSD

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Laptops" @ 03:00 AM

"Just before the latest MacBook Pro updates were released, rumors swirled that the new models would adopt solid-state drives (SSD) in addition to hard disk drives (HDD) and drop internal optical DVD drives across the line."

I was hoping for more options with the SSD and the MacBook Pro, but with this handy how-to guide I'm not sure it matters now. You lose the optical drive but with the Mac App Store open, you may not even need to use it. I'm finding very limited usage for mine with my MacBook Air. How about you, any interest in this or have you done this already?
