Need some iOS Help With Your Taxes?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/04/11/five...ps-for-tax-day/

"With roughly a week to go before taxes are due -- the federal deadline is on April 18 and many states have followed suit -- plenty of Americans are scrambling to file before the clock ticks away. We've gone and found five apps that will help you make Tax Day, and waiting for that refund, a bit easier."

All good apps, but not all for the same purpose. The free IRS app called IRS2GO is for checking on the status of your return (or refund depending on your situation) and iDonatedIt is for keeping track of your donations throughout the year for your tax return. The other three actually help you file, and if you are filing EZ then it seems like they would work pretty well. I'm thinking the IRS app is going to be helpful, and for keeping track throughout this year instead of going through my donation slips at year end, iDonatedIt [affiliate link] might be worth a look.

Why the iPad Price Difference Internationally Steve?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.macrumors.com/2010/05/08...cing-and-taxes/

"With Apple's announcement on Friday regarding availability of the iPad in nine new countries later this month, a number of potential customers expressed dismay at the apparent higher prices in those countries relative to those in the United States. Several of those customers took the time to email Apple CEO Steve Jobs with complaints on the issue, two of whom shared his identical responses with us."

For the customer in the UK, Steve said "Please educate yourself. UK prices must by law include VAT, which is around 18%. US prices do not include tax." When a customer in Germany sent a similar email, Steve said "Blame your government. Germany just added a new copyright levy for computers." Obviously we don't have those taxes (yet anyway) in the US so this just adds to the cost of the device. I think they have always had a price difference because of things such as this haven't they?

New York to Tax Digital Downloads

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Talk" @ 04:00 PM

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local...e_new_york.html

"Gov. Paterson's proposed $121 billion budget hits New Yorkers in their iPods - and nickels-and-dimes them in lots of other places, too. Trying to close a $15.4 billion budget gap, Paterson called for 88 new fees and a host of other taxes, including an "iPod tax" that taxes the sale of downloaded music and other "digitally delivered entertainment services." "We're going to have to take some extreme measures," Paterson said Tuesday after unveiling the slash-and-burn budget."

I don't know if I care that much about this. My initial reaction to this was "Don't they already tax those?" I had to look at some old iTunes receipts to see if they did (they most certainly don't). I'm not happy paying more, but if I went and bought the CD I'd have to pay sales tax on that just the same. Of course, with a CD you own the music, so paying the sales tax on something you own is one thing; your right to own a CD is a little more set in stone than your right to "own" a digital download. I know I'm probably opening up a can of worms, but what do you all think? I'm guessing most of you are going to be very much against this. Am I wrong?
