The UBB Deception: Usage Based Billing in Canada Explained

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home News" @ 09:30 PM

This is one of more easier to understand videos when it comes to the issue of Usage Based Billing - UBB - and what it really means. I'm putting this on every site in the network because if you're in Canada, you need to understand what's happening (everyone else in the world might find it interesting). Now that one of the ISPs here in Canada has admitted that the pricing of their plans is not linked to actual use, the logic behind UBB start to become even more baffling. We know the motivation is money, but as a "small c capitalist" I believe there's room for plenty of profit while still being fair to your customers. The model of usage-based billing we use in society for buying clothes and food should be applied in the same way for a data connection. Read more...

Canada Gets a Discount

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 08:00 AM

"For those of you in Canada, good news. The cell carriers Telus and Bell have announced pricing and availability for the iPhone 3G and 3GS. In addition, Rogers will be announcing an update to its pricing."

Telus and Bell announced their pricing and availability, ranging from $99.00 CAD for the 8GB to $299.00 CAD for the 32GB 3GS. The data plans vary a bit, ranging from $50.00 CAD to $100.00 CAD with variety of plans in between for both companies depending on the data plan you choose. Rogers is also supposed to be announcing their plan soon. From what I gather in the article, location may be your determining factor due to the coverage areas, so check out the coverage map provided by iphoneincanada.ca prior to purchase.

I agree with the author; I'm jealous of all the competition our neighbors to the North have going on and wish we had it!

Telus and Bell Will Sell iPhone in Canada

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 10:30 AM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-1...subj=News-Apple

"Many Canadians are cheering as Telus and Bell announced plans Tuesday to begin selling Apple's popular iPhone, ending Rogers reign as the exclusive iPhone carrier in Canada."

Both companies will begin selling the iPhone in November of this year, after upgrading their networks to support HSPA (high-speed packet access), which is used by the iPhone. Both companies previously had CDMA networks. This will give Canadians three companies to choose from, as Rogers is the other company in Canada selling the iPhone. They may get quite a lot of business as Rogers also has a very unhappy customer base, as evidenced by websites that were created like www.ruinediphone.com.
