Fargo Gets The iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/02/11/veri...tandt-coverage/

"Up until yesterday, mobile phone customers in vast parts of Montana, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, and Nebraska had no way to get an iPhone. Why? There simply wasn't any AT&T coverage in these areas, so the customers -- who were mostly on Verizon -- had no access to the popular smartphone."

This is really where the "lines" were, in areas that previously had no AT&T coverage so had to make do with those "other" smartphones. Even though weather played a part in keeping some home, and I'm sure some pre-ordered, they still had some diehards lining up to get their hands on one of the iPhone 4s.

New York Gets Better Service From AT&T

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/06/30/atan...ce-is-improved/

"While AT&T's service has been notoriously bad even before the iPhone launch, iPhone users in New York City have suffered some of the worst of it, with one Apple Genius reportedly saying that 30% dropped call rate was average. (I think he misspelled "atrocious.")"

But since the upgrade announced this week in New York, that should stop yes? According to Marco.org the answer is most definitely yes. How about some reports from our New York readership, have you noticed the improvement?

Are You Prepared for the Apple Event Today?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/ne...y-10am-pacific/

"iLounge is headed to Cupertino, California to provide live coverage of Apple's iPhone OS 4 event. The event will be held at Apple's campus within its Town Hall presentation room, and will begin at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, or 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time."

iLounge isn't the only one going either. Several blogs and news sites will be there so you have a choice in how you get your coverage. Here are a few of them to check out for the coverage today:

It will be interesting to see just what Apple is coming up with so pick a site and watch the show. We shall see if encece is right about his predictions!

AT&T Succeeds at SXSW

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.macnn.com/articles/10/03...rlier.promises/

"Despite widespread reports of AT&T service issues at the 2009 South By Southwest (SXSW) gathering in Austin, the network has reportedly survived so far during this year's event. Observations from many iPhone owners suggest the network is maintaining the high volume, in contrast to the previous experiences described as 'flaky at best.'"

AT&T accomplished what they set out to do, which is provide the needed coverage at SXSW, the festival held each year in Austin, TX. They hedged their bets with two COWS (cell-sites on wheels) as well as a new antenna at the Austin Convention Center and it appears it paid off as no one is reporting any major problems with the network, unlike last year. The festival runs through the 21st of this month.

AT&T Expands MicroCell Service

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/26/atan...e-more-markets/

"We've previously written about AT&T's MicroCell device and service here at TUAW. It's a tiny cell tower that you plug into your home cable or DSL connection to boost your phone reception. This is particularly handy for those with home offices who may currently be plagued with poor reception on their iPhones."

And now five more markets have been added to their trial list. Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Las Vegas and San Diego residents now can set up their very own MicroCell, but only if they want to spend the additional $19.99 USD per month on top of the existing AT&T bill (besides the $150.00 USD the device costs). The MicroCell covers an area up to 5,000 square feet and is perfect for those with spotty coverage in their homes. Seems like a steep price to pay for this though, should AT&T just fix the coverage issues for their customers?

iPad a Drain on AT&T?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/146...l?lsrc=rss_main

"Now that AT&T has taken its lumps from competitors and users over the size of its 3G network, the company is determined not to be caught flat footed again."

So the day after iPad, AT&T comes out with information that basically says we won't let you down. They are committing to investing $2 billion USD on improving their wireless network in 2010 adding approximately 2,000 new cell sites to expand coverage. AT&T also expects by the end of 2011 to have 90 percent of their 3G network covered with the transition to HSPA 7.2 technology. Even though this came on the heels of the iPad announcement, I don't think this will be as much a drain on the AT&T network as others are thinking it will be. I'm of the opinion that this will mainly be in the home or used where there is Wi-Fi available for the most part. I could be wrong, but I'm basing it on the fact that the iPad, while portable, isn't like the iPhone that is carried everywhere you go. I see the regular user having it in a place they normally use Wi-Fi like the home, office or dorm. What are your thoughts?

SNL Slams iPhone in Skit

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...k_coverage.html

"A joke about the iPhone's perceived poor cell service earned laughter and applause from the audience on a new episode of Saturday Night Live this weekend. Comedian Seth Meyers on the program's "Weekend Update" segment noted reports from last week that Google allegedly intends to sell its own handset in 2010. That touchscreen device looks to compete with Apple's iPhone."

Ouch.

Canada Gets a Discount

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/11/02/upda...r-canada-annou/

"For those of you in Canada, good news. The cell carriers Telus and Bell have announced pricing and availability for the iPhone 3G and 3GS. In addition, Rogers will be announcing an update to its pricing."

Telus and Bell announced their pricing and availability, ranging from $99.00 CAD for the 8GB to $299.00 CAD for the 32GB 3GS. The data plans vary a bit, ranging from $50.00 CAD to $100.00 CAD with variety of plans in between for both companies depending on the data plan you choose. Rogers is also supposed to be announcing their plan soon. From what I gather in the article, location may be your determining factor due to the coverage areas, so check out the coverage map provided by iphoneincanada.ca prior to purchase.

I agree with the author; I'm jealous of all the competition our neighbors to the North have going on and wish we had it!
