In New Survey Developers Pick Android Over iPhone

Posted by Karey Westfall in "Android News" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile...prefer-android/

"A new survey from Vision Mobile and Bluevia finds that Android is the most popular mobile platform amongst developers, with 67 percent of mobile developers indicating they're developing for Android in 2011-that's an 8 percent improvement over 2010."

We have a winner, folks! A new survey just released from Vision Mobile and Bluevia found that Android is the most popular platform for developers! But not far behind is development for iPhone. Does this mean that Android is slated to be the market leader in years to come?

Stanford Offering iPhone Development Courses Via iTunes

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 12:00 PM

http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2...tm_campaign=rss

"Like it did last year, Stanford University has posted the complete lecture and presentation slides for the Winter 2010 term's iPhone Application Development course. If you aren't in school or your local center for higher education hasn't jumped on the bandwagon and offered its own course, the Stanford course may be a good substitute."

I watched some of the lectures they produced in April of last year (they have since reissued the slides in iTunes) and they really are well done. This series just started and is available now in iTunes [link]. The course is taught by Paul Marcos and Alan Cannistraro, both Apple employees. This series includes APIs from the latest iPhone 3.1 SDK and also have closed captioning. But, unless you are actually enrolled in the course you can't get any help from the instructors via email so don't even try. With 4.4 million downloads from the last series, I think you can see why.

SYNCcast From Ford

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 07:00 AM

"'There's a mobile app for that' as Ford opens the interface to its Sync system. The Sync Open API lets developers create applications, or port over existing applications, for use with the Sync audio and Bluetooth system that's on more than a million Fords, Lincolns, and Mercurys."

Get Noticed, Get in a Commercial

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.businessinsider.com/how-...mmercial-2009-9

"If you want your branded app to be included in Apple's next iPhone commercial, the first rule is not to ask. The second rule? Make the app really useful to consumers."

The Apple commercial exposure can really boost the exposure. One app, Epicurious, saw a boost in downloads of 20,000 just after a commercial ran that had featured their application. But when it boils down to it, the people making these adds use the product too, so fill the need and don't make a crappy app, perhaps you will get noticed. I think it is more luck than anything when it comes to being featured in one of the commercials, or perhaps a little of who you know.

20,000 Apps at Your Disposal

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/02/10/app-...es-20-000-apps/

"Our friends over at Apptism, a site that tracks and rates App Store apps, have pointed out that their counter recently flipped over the big two-zero... zero zero zero. That's right, only three months after hitting the 10,000 mark (and that took only six months), the amount of apps in the store has doubled, and there's no sign the acceleration will be stopping any time soon."

Pretty impressive, doubling the inventory only three months after hitting number 10,000. And download numbers appear to be going along with it, hitting 500,000,000 mark about a month ago. It doesn't hurt that Apple appears to make it pretty easy to write applications for the iPhone/iPod Touch, and the approval process appears to go smoothly for most of the companies.

Remember the Milk For the iPhone Now Available

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 10:00 AM

http://blog.rememberthemilk.com/200...-available.html

"We set about re-creating pretty much all of RTM on the iPhone, but that was a big (ahem) task! We recruited a new team member to help us (we didn't mention it at the time, but Ab's a Mac developer... we're sneaky like that). You know you've been staring at your iPhone just a tad too long when you reach out to tap an icon on your iMac screen, so we're happy to announce that we're finally done! The app is now available as a free download on the App Store for RTM Pro users."

Last year, Remember the Milk released one heck of a web-app version of their service for iPhone users. I was very excited, signed up, and enjoyed it greatly. Of course, that ended immediately upon entering the subway and realizing that there was no offline access. On Wednesday, all that came to an end as RTM released the single most polished To-Do app thus far for the iPhone. Gone is the need to be online with it, and the amount of features they've ported over from the service itself is awesome. And it's free! The catch, of course, is that you have to be a Pro account holder with Remember the Milk, but at $25 even that isn't such a bad deal, and considering Apple hasn't gotten off their collective bottoms and created an alternative, I'll be sticking with this one permanently.
