Viacom and CBS Also Say No to Apple TV and iTunes Rentals

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.edibleapple.com/viacom-a...+(Edible+Apple)

"Thus far, only 2 networks (ABC and FOX) have jumped on board Apple's $0.99 rental model for individual TV episodes. Meanwhile, executives from both Warner Brothers and NBC Universal have explained that the low price point for individual episodes is not something they're willing to get behind out of fear that it undermines the quality of their content."

CBS is more on the fence about it than Viacom is, saying "let's see how this works out," but with the recent removal of Jeff Zucker as CEO of NBC, perhaps they might rethink their position at NBC and be the third network in the stable. Once the other networks see how well (or how bad) this deal is for their networks, it may change things up a bit. Seems kind of funny though, when the networks will allow streaming via Netflix but not via iTunes. According to this Ars Technica story, the networks get a flat rate and no viewer metrics (such as how many times watched, etc) from Netflix and that is ok, but to get a percentage of sales and also get some metrics isn't ok? I would think they would be able to utilize the information they can get from iTunes and it would be a benefit. But it matters not as long as you aren't totally committed to Apple products and nothing else. There are still lots of options out there, namely Hulu, Netflix and Boxee.

CBS Switching to HTML5

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 12:00 PM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2010/05/cbs-html5/

"They're taking their time, but it's coming; CBS just announced this week that it's turning its entire video content on CBS.com into the iPhone-friendly HTML5. This means that by this fall, you'll be able to enjoy Horatio Caine, Barney Stinson, Anthony DiNozzo and many more right from your iPhone OS devices."

And it will be direct streaming from their website, unlike ABC, so it even makes watching on your iPhone or iPod Touch possible. Sweet. Now all we need is NBC and Fox to get onboard the HTML5 train.

March Madness 2010 App From CBS

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 11:00 AM

"CBS Interactive today released the 2010 March Madness application ($9.99 app store). Big difference over last year? 3G streaming of games! It is just a shame that the iPad won't be out until April."

You can get the paid app here, for $9.99 USD, but the free "lite" version has highlights and pretty much everything the paid version does except for the live streaming video of the games. I agree it's too bad the iPad won't be available for it, but at least you will be able to use the iPad with MLB At Bat 2010!

ABC Big on Boxee

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 09:00 AM

http://blog.boxee.tv/2009/01/19/boxee-gets-lost/

"According to Torrentfreak, Lost was the most downloaded TV Show on Bittorrent in 2008.. ABC has two other shows on that Top 10 list (Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy). It is clear ABC is producing great content, and it is no surprise that our users want to stream it on boxee."

Since I'm away from my beloved DVR (it used to be a Tivo but that is a painful story) for most of the week while at work, this sounds like a pretty good alternative. They hope to release an Apple TV version soon. I stream shows now from ABC, CBS and FOX but I'm always looking for something better, at least until I can afford to get a Slingbox. Or maybe I won't have to buy one?
