As Far as Ad Impressions, Android Beats iOS

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...ile_ad_network/

"Android devices have surpassed iOS devices for the first time in ad impressions on at least one mobile ad network. In its December 2010 Mobile Mix Report, Millennial Media reported Thursday that Android accounted for 46% of impressions served by the network during December of 2010, compared to 32% for iOS devices, marking the first time Apple's platform has played second fiddle to Android on the network."

Even though the platform may be playing second fiddle, as a manufacturer Apple is still number one at 20.06% of the devices that received ads. How does the top three look? Well besides Apple at number one, Samsung had 17.23%, HTC had 15.3% and bring up 4th place was RIM with 12.13%. They also break it down into individual devices and Apple was still number one followed by Blackberry Curve, the iPod Touch and then HTC Nexus One. The iPad came in at 8th place on that list. It will be very interesting to see how this all plays out once the iPhone hits the Verizon market.

iAd Debuts With Tron

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 07:00 AM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2010/12/...ay-tron-legacy/

"Apple is showing off its iAd advertising service today, with a preview of how advertisements will look when the service launches on the iPad in 2011. Quite aptly, Apple is demonstrating the future of advertising by basing its first iAd around Tron Legacy, a move which has been hailed for its futuristic qualities."

According to the article, the ad takes over the full screen when it appears and comes with over ten minutes of video along with images and information about the movie, as well as theaters and showtimes. You can also purchase the soundtrack on iTunes without even leaving the ad. But this will be it for 2010 according to Apple Insider, who reports that this iAd will be the only one released until 2011, however in Europe iAds is debuting this month. I don't know about you but I'm very interested to see how this plays out, from what I've seen of the iAd examples they appear to have done a great job with them. I much prefer these to the other banner ads I've seen in various applications, and I'm more apt to actually check them out if there is some interactivity involved. What are your thoughts?

Curious About iAds?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Articles & Resources" @ 02:00 AM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2010/11/...nches-iad-site/

"Apple has recently launched a new iAd site, which you can check out by heading over to http://advertising.apple.com. The webpage comes following the announcement of Europe's iAd partners, which we heard about in an Apple statement that was released a couple of days ago. The webpage itself shows off the power of iAds, which Apple states is 'advertising reimagined.'"

If advertising interests you, and you want to find out all about what Apple is doing with iAds, head on over to the advertising page at Apple. You can learn about the partners, see examples of the ads in use and if you are a company interested in being a partner they have some information for you as well. Say what you will, but Apple really does a slick job with iAd, as you can see from the above video.

An Ad That Integrates Print and the iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/10/06/foun...innovative-iad/

"AXA Insurance and Financial Services (a company that just hired my son this morning) has come up with a very creative iAd to introduce an app for their Belgium based auto insurance division."

Very clever and innovative. Basically set the iPhone down on the page, play the video and watch the printed ad come to life. This is one of the most interesting ads I've seen, and when you think about it quite simple. Simple enough that I wonder why it hasn't been done sooner?

iAd Predicted to be a Success

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:00 AM

http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2010/09..._medium=twitter

"The pie chart at right below is somewhat premature, given that it is IDC's best guess -- via Bloomberg Businessweek -- of what the $500 million mobile advertising market will look three months from now."

Starting at 0% at the beginning of this year, and IDC predicts Apple will have 21% of the market for the mobile advertising market, so I'd say you could call it a success. That is if the prediction holds true.

iAds Will Fail Claims YaWhoo CEO

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 06:19 PM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...ill_fall_apart/

"Yahoo! CEO, Carol Bartz, thinks Apple's iAd service is doomed to failure because potential advertisers will eventually get tired of the company's controlling nature.iAd is Apple's own mobile advertising service designed to push ads to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch apps. "Apple wants total control over those ads," Ms. Bartz told Reuters."

I go to Yahoo! for their sports section, mainly the fantasy sports stuff and I sometimes have a look at their finance section, but other than that I pretty much forget about them. So I find it interesting that she thinks that iAd is doomed. I believe they also thought that the iTunes model was doomed as well didn't they? Is Yahoo! really that relevant any more? Perhaps she should focus on Bing? What are your thoughts?

iAd, Not so Smooth Sailing

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 08:30 AM

http://thenextweb.com/apple/2010/08...eb+Top+Stories)

"iAd. The very mention of the Apple-branded advertising platform a few months ago brought about cheers and jeers alike for the company. As we have moved through the time following the announcement, many have profited but still more are standing on their soap boxes and whining loudly about a number of issues surrounding the product."

This reminds me of the cut-and-paste-delay, and the complaints that were so prevalent about it. But it turned out the reason for the delay was Apple wanting to do it right the first time, and that seems to be the issue here. Those who are participating seem happy with the results, and I think if the advertisers are patient enough to work within the system (unlike Chanel for example), they will be pleased with the results. Time will tell, but Apple knows what works, at least they have proven it in my mind so far. What are your thoughts? Do you think at some point advertisers will wash their hands of iAd or will they be patient enough to participate?

iAds Starting To Appear …

Posted by Michael Knutson in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 06:00 AM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2010/07/apple-unrolls-iads/

“Right on schedule, today Apple is on its way to reinventing mobile advertising by officially launching its iAd advertising program.”

As promised, Apple has started the promotion of iAds, and examples are starting to appear around the web. As a revenue generator for developers, this seems to be a sound concept, but billing advertisers $2 for each click seems like a decimal point was misplaced somewhere. I wonder where this number came from.

Have No Fear, iAd is Here (But You Can Opt Out, Sort Of...)

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/apple-make...w+(Cult+of+Mac)

"With yesterday's major update to iOS comes a major new source of revenue for both Cupertino and app developers: iAd, Apple's new mobile advertising service."

Yes, Apple is giving you an "opt out" option, but all that means is that the ads you do see may not be very relevant to you. If you go to https://oo.apple.com/ on your mobile device, you can opt out of sharing your information with iAd so they don't send you user-targeted ads. So really, what is the point of that? If I have to see ads, I'd like to see ads I might have an interest in. What are your thoughts?
