India and Japan Show Up Big for iPad 2 Launch

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/04/29/ipad...aws-big-crowds/

"Apple's iPad 2 made its official debut in Japan on Thursday along the white iPhone 4. The second generation tablet debuted for 44,800 yen (US$500) and was available from Apple Stores and the wireless carrier Softbank Mobile."

They were lining up by 9pm the night before the launch in Japan, and in Mumbai, India, the lines were also impressive apparently. Good news for Apple, bad news for those of us hoping the supply chain might loosen up to shorten the wait for ours!

Donate to Japanese Relief Fund Via iTunes

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 07:34 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/03/13/appl...ief-fund-via-i/

"Following the disaster caused by the magnitude 8.9 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Apple has posted a donation page on iTunes where you can use your iTunes account to make a secure donation to the American Red Cross and its Japanese relief fund."

100% of the donations made through this link to iTunes go to the relief fund so no off the top percentages are taken by Apple. Or if you prefer, you can go to this site and see other ways to donate.

iPod So Powerful it can Stop a Train!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPods" @ 08:30 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/16/...train-in-tokyo/

"Poor Apple. The company just can't catch a break these days. On Wednesday, Apple Japan began offering customers iPod nano replacements, giving in to local government demands to better address an overheating battery issue affecting Apple's first generation iPod nano players."

Apparently this iPod owner was one of those who didn't take up Apple on its offer, or perhaps she was on her way to the Apple store to do just that when this happened. How ironic would that have been?

SoftBank Announces iPhone 4 Pricing in Japan

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 05:00 AM

http://9to5mac.com/expense_iphone_4...e+Intelligence)

"Softbank has revealed Japanese prices for the iPhone 4. Prices are unsubsidized -- but the carrier has introduced different data deals designed to ease the pain (a little)."

If you are in Japan and plan on pre-ordering an iPhone 4 on June 15th, you should know they will only have black available, you have to provide ID and the prices will be 57,600 yen ($699.00 USD) for the 32GB version and 46.080 yen ($500.00 USD) for the 16GB version. I'm thinking this isn't out of line with other countries pricing or is it? The bonus here is that SoftBank is offering an unlimited plan for 4,410 yen ($48.00 USD) per month, but they give you a subsidy of 1,920 yen ($20.00 USD) per month, bringing your true monthly cost to 2,490 yen ($28.00 USD). Pay a little more for the iPhone 4 and save quite a bit on the monthly charge for unlimited. You can find out more about this plan and the other ones they offer at the MobileInJapan website.

"I'm Huge in Japan" Says iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2009/12...-android-arent/

"It's big in Korea, it's probably big in China's grey market, and the iPhone continues to be big in Japan. According to a report [JP] released by Tokyo-based research company Impress R&D, the iPhone has captured a whopping 46.1% of the domestic smartphone market."

Launched in Japan in the summer of 2008, the 3G has just under 25% of the market, while the 3GS hit 21.5%. They now have a user base of 3 million which is 10% of the global userbase according to the article. SoftBank Mobile has been pretty aggressive with their advertising, something that isn't happening for the Blackberry or Android. Pretty impressive though, almost hitting 1/2 of a market that you didn't exist in a little over a year ago, especially in a place like Japan that is known for being ahead of the curve when it comes to wireless technology.

Need an iPhone in Japan?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.chinapost.com.tw/busines...bank-offers.htm

"Softbank Corp., Japan's third-largest mobile-phone company, will offer new customers Apple Inc.'s iPhone 3GS with 16 gigabytes of memory for free or the 32- gigabyte model for half price to bolster sales."

Sounds like they have a monthly payment plan with their iPhones, the 32-GB runs roughly $5.53 USD after the price drop. I guess if you spend a lot of time in Japan it might be worth it. The offer runs from December 4th through January 31st, 2010.
