AT&T Eases International Data Rates For Travelers

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.cnet.com/8301-17918_1-57...et/pRza+(Crave)

"Linking to foreign data networks has always been a risky proposition fraught with big financial risks. Tales abound of American users racking up $1,000 phone bills on cruise ships at sea or while vacationing in European countries."

Well now AT&T is going to try and ease those fears by lowering the prices on their international plans. Not by much mind you, since the rates will be 120MB for $30 per month up to 800MB for $120 per month. It sure beats $1,000 though doesn't it?

Outside the US? Let Apple Show You What is Available in the Cloud

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 09:30 AM

http://gigaom.com/apple/apple-detai...(GigaOM:+Apple)

"Apple has finally made it very clear exactly which media content can be made available in the cloud in which countries for Automatic Downloads and Apple TV streaming, as well as where iTunes Match is available."

If you are outside the United States, you can head over to this support document at Apple and find out which countries are supported by iTunes match and iCloud capability. The chart on the page shows the countries alphabetically and also what kind of iTunes content will be available in the "Cloud" for you. As a general rule of thumb, applications and books are available in all the countries, but only four countries (Australia, Canada, the U.K. and the U.S.) off all options.

International Travel and the iPhone

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 02:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/162...l#lsrc.rss_main

"One of the most interesting wrinkles in the iPhone 4S-which I review at length elsewhere-is its status as a "world phone." Unlike previous generations, it supports both CDMA (Verizon, Sprint) and GSM (AT&T, the rest of the world) wireless technology right out of the box. But there are some interesting quirks to this product that may please savvy international travelers."

Basically it means that if you are Sprint or Verizon subscriber, you may have a better International experience than those of us with AT&T, or at least a cheaper one. All you have to do is ask for an "International Unlock" of the SIM slot apparently (with Verizon after 60 days, Sprint already comes this way). This way its a bit cheaper to roam apparently, but you can't use the same phone number. Decisions decisions. Have you used international services with your AT&T phone? How was the experience for you? I'm sure it's not as simple as I'm making it out to be but since I've never done it, I am wondering just how well it works.

Vonage's Time to Call App: 15 Free Minutes, International Calling and a Free iPad 2!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:40 AM

Time to Call is a free app from Vonage, that lets you make phone calls (including international calls) from your iPhone or iPad 2 at very affordable rates. And as a bonus, they are giving you 15 minutes of calling time when you download the app using this link. The cool thing about this app is that it uses your iTunes account to pay for the minutes, so you don't have to mess around with calling cards or getting an operator involved. All you do is make the call and it will subtract the charges direct from your iTunes account. The rates are pretty reasonable too as outlined in the details below:

  • Pay per call and talk up to 15 minutes to 100 countries for $1.99 or less (not including taxes)
  • For an additional 90+ countries, talk up to 15 minutes for $2.99 to $9.99 (not including taxes)
  • Works on WiFi internationally, 3G in the US and Canada
  • FREE download - No need to be a Vonage home customer
  • LIMITED TIME OFFER: Download now and call up to 15 minutes for FREE.

If you go to the Vonage site, you can easily find out how much your 15 minutes of calling time will be as it is based on the country you are calling. Simply select the country from the drop down list and it gives you the cost in US Dollars. Pretty simple. For example, calling Argentina will set you back $1.99 USD for 15 minutes of calling time, of course that is not including the 15 free minutes you get just for downloading the app. And make sure to read on to find out how to win an iPad 2 from Vonage as part of their promotion for the new app.

iPad 2 Launching Internationally on March 25th

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:22 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/apple-ipad...-5pm-local-time

"Given how difficult it is to get an iPad 2 in America right now, you didn't have to be a die-hard cynic to think that Apple was going to have to repeat 2010′s one month international delay in launching the iPad internationally."

I guess they must have confidence they have enough in the channels to satisfy the demand, as well as supply all those of use waiting for our iPad 2 in the US, since Apple is planning to launch the iPad 2 in 25 countries this Friday. Apple also announced in April the iPad 2 will be available in additional countries to include Hong Kong, Korea and Singapore.

"Speaking from Apple's "AntennaGate" Press Conference, Steve Jobs has just announced that the iPhone 4 will available in seventeen more countries on July 30th. Additionally, he also told the audience that Apple's white iPhone 4 will also be available at the end of July."

The white iPhone 4 is also supposed to be available for sale by the end of July so if it hasn't happened yet, will it tomorrow?

iPhone 4, is it All You Thought it Would Be?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:35 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...veils_iphone_4/

"Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the company's next generation iPhone during his World Wide Developers Conference keynote presentation on Monday. The new version of the combination iPod and smartphone looks like the images that leaked to the media, includes a front-facing camera for the first time, and is called iPhone 4."

In reading the blogs yesterday, I thought it was pretty funny when Steve said "Stop me if you've seen this before" as he unveiled the iPhone 4. Good to see some humor displayed about it. But I digress! Lots of new features, over 100 or so including the new camera with LED flash, video calling, higher resolution display and, according to Steve, the "thinnest smartphone ever." Besides the improved camera and the cool video calling features, what I really liked to hear was the improved battery life. So, now that you've had time to digest yesterdays announcement, what are your thoughts about the iPhone 4?

So if you have an iPad that you had sent to you from the States, you can now go into the iPad App Store and start your shopping. If not, then you will have to wait until next week!

International Wi-Fi iPad Pre-Orders Pushed Back to June 7th

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/05/12/new-...ll-ship-june-7/

"That was fast. Apple has updated international websites to note that iPad pre-orders accepted from today on out will ship by June 7th. If you've already placed an order, you can still expect to receive your shiny new device on May 28th."

This week they started accepting pre-orders, initially with a ship date of May 28th, but now it appears that has been moved back about a week. This goes hand in hand with the news about shortages in the US, which have led to orders with ship dates 7 to 10 days out. I wonder if they will reach the $1 billion dollars in revenue that is predicted if these shortages aren't corrected?

Going Traveling With Your iPad? Budget for Data

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/05/04/atan...-you-yearn-for/

"You've just picked up that nice iPad 3G and now you're heading off on vacation in Europe in a month. You'd like to keep up with news about Icelandic volcanoes, so you're taking your iPad with you. How much is it going to cost you to do data roaming as you wander the streets of Venice? Unfortunately, a lot."

This is of course if you use the 3G service, and if I was traveling to any of the countries on the AT&T list then I don't think I would use their plan. I haven't done much international traveling but can't you just get a sim card from the country you are in and use that instead of using your AT&T sim? Wouldn't that be cheaper than what AT&T is going to provide? I mean, it's not like it is your iPhone and you need to keep the same number so people can reach you. Wi-Fi seems the place to go when you travel with one of these.

iBook Also Going International

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.macnn.com/articles/10/05...ries.confirmed/

"Most or all countries getting the iPad on May 28th will also get iBooks and access to the iBookstore at the same time, Apple has disclosed. So far confirmed are Australia, Canada, Italy, Japan, Spain and the UK. France, Germany and Switzerland are likely to have iBooks support as well, but this has yet to be mentioned by Apple."

What a nightmare it must be to negotiate all of the issues such as iBooks internationally, when each country has different laws regarding copyrights and the like. I can see why they have such trouble getting them to work right or they have delays such as iTunes and movies.

International Customers, Pre-Order Your iPad Starting Today

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/201.../05/07ipad.html

"Apple® today announced that iPadTM will be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK on Friday, May 28."

And starting today, May 10th, you can pre-order the version you want. Already in the US, Apple has sold over a million of these jewels.

International iPad Shipments Delayed

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 10:00 AM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-2...subj=News-Apple

"Apple's iPad won't be available outside the U.S. until the end of May, a delay of one month from its original global launch date."

Sorry to our friends in other countries, but the U.S. demand was stronger than Apple thoughts so it appears you won't be getting your hands on an iPad until the end of May, but you can pre-order on Monday, May 10th.

Vonage for iPhone/iPod Touch

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/143...s_iphonecentral

"Those looking to make cheap international calls via their iPhone may not yet be able to do so using a native Google Voice application, but that hasn't stopped VoIP company Vonage from offering similar capabilities in its new app for iPhone and iPod touch."

If you already use Vonage, this doesn't connect you to your account. This is a pay-as-you-go account. You have to set up a new account, and you get $1.00 USD credit as a reward for your trouble. You also get Twitter as part of the app for posting how exciting your international call making ability is, and then reading about it later. The apps, one for iPhone and one for iPod Touch, are both free.

Apple Retail Wins International Award

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.ifoapplestore.com/db/200...der-win-awards/

"An international retail industry group has awarded Apple and Sr. V-P Retail Ron Johnson its highest honors for 2009, citing the company's products, customer service and fresh approach to retailing."

According to the World Retail Congress website, they were "launched in 2007 the Congress has become the annual platform for the most senior executives within the retail industry to come together to share best practice, make lasting business contacts and exchange ideas on the most crucial global issues." So this is an award at the executive level, not so much for the products as it is for the process. Regardless, its nice for Apple to be recognized as "Retailer of the Year" at this yearly conference. The other finalists for this award were Aldi, Pao de Acucar Group, Fast Retailing, Primark and Wal-Mart. I recognize Wal-Mart, not sure on the other companies but it is a "world" conference.
