iPad Update for TomTom

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 AM

http://9to5mac.com/2011/10/21/tomto...mized-for-ipad/

"If you are the type that likes a 10″ display for driving navigation, TomTom just updated its $59.99 iOS turn-by-turn navigation app to be universal and optimized for the iPad. You'll of course want to have a 3G version of the iPad/iPad 2 or be tethered through an iPhone that can share GPS."

Obviously it would be best to have the 3G iPad so you can use it in more places than your neighborhood Starbucks. One interesting note is that TomTom says this is the last update that will function on the iPhone 3G. Wonder what they have up their sleeves?

Fix TomTom Car Kit to Work With iPhone 4

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:00 AM

"I was gutted to find this morning that my brand new iPhone 4 didn't work with my beloved TomTom Car Kit - the best automotive cradle/charger for the iPhone, bar none."

Imagine his delight when he fixed the problem, with a simple piece of velcro. You can also use a small piece of foam, as all you need to do is create enough of a barrier to force the iPhone 4 to make the connection with the car kit. Simple. And cheap.

Speaking of TomTom, They Dropped Their Prices!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 01:00 PM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2010/05/...-lowest-prices/

"TomTom has placed both of their U.S. iPhone navigation apps on sale for their lowest prices ever, which means you can give your mom the gift of navigation for Mother's Day without breaking the bank. It will also probably be more fun for her to use than that cooking apron you gave her last year for Mother's Day."

TomTom for the U.S. has dropped to $39.95 USD ($20 off the normal price) while the TomTom U.S. Canada version has dropped to $49.99 USD (also a drop of $20 from the normal price). Couple this with the Star Wars voices and they are making it very attractive to own TomTom don't you think?

TomTom Updated

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.iphonealley.com/current/...ey+-+Site-wide)

"Today TomTom released another impressive update for its iPhone app, including optional traffic updates (via in-app purchase) plus a slew of new features, such as Google local search, pinch to zoom, automatic day/night mode, and music fading for voice directions."

Quite a few feature updates, such as automatic day/night mode, automatic music fading for turn-by-turn directions, pinch to zoom for details on the map, local area places of interest from Google and you can add to TomTom by importing location from other applications.

The update from Tom Tom is free to existing users, and they have also dropped the price on the app $30.00USD for the U.S. and Canada version. The US version is $59.99 USD and the US/Canada version is $69.99 USD. If you want the optional traffic service via in-app purchase, that will run $19.99 USD per year.

TomTom Updates Their App

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 07:00 AM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2009/10/...gps-technology/

"I woke up this morning to what I thought was a welcoming surprise: a TomTom iPhone app update! Yes, it's true, TomTom finally realized that they still had an app sitting in the App Store just waiting to be updated with all kinds of glorious new features."

It has been a couple months since the app was released so it was certainly due for an update. However, even though they have updated the address formats and accuracy with U.S. addresses, they still haven't given it text-to-speech or real-time traffic options, two things that users wanted. I'm certainly no expert on GPS devices since I don't own one, and all I have used with GPS is the iPhone mapping with Google maps but I can understand the frustration.

TomTom Car Kit Announced for October

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/143...l?lsrc=rss_main

"Are you lost? I don't mean metaphorically, I mean literally: are you at this very moment stuck in an unknown location, scratching your head and wondering if you should have taken that left turn at Albuquerque? Well, if you don't mind waiting a bit-and forking over some cash-help could be on the way. TomTom has announced that its car kit for the iPhone will ship in October for $120 (or €99 if you live on the other side of the Atlantic from me)."

Still no word on if software is part of this price, but TomTom did say they were going to bundle this with software so my guess is that this is stand-alone unit price.

TomTom Debuts Their Software in the iTunes Store

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ore_for_99.html

"A day after the TomTom navigation software saw an overseas roll out, the iPhone application hit North America and Europe and is now available for download in the App Store."

Yesterday it was finally available in the US iTunes store having previously been released in Australia and New Zealand among other places. The US and Canada version goes for $99.99 USD, whereas Australia is $79.99 USD and New Zealand is $94.99 USD. If you plan on travel to Western Europe, that version goes for $139.99 USD. These will work in either the 3G and 3GS since they have built in GPS, however once the combo hardware kit comes out, this will work in the 1st gen iPhone and iPod touch since the combo unit has it's own GPS. No price yet on the combo kit.

AT&T Debuts Turn By Turn Navigation App

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._app_store.html

"AT&T on Tuesday became the latest player to attempt to capitalize on what's sure to become a multi-million dollar market for iPhone-based turn-by-turn GPS driving solutions, launching its AT&T Navigator software on the App Store."

Since the WWDC TomTom announcement this year, I have been waiting for them to make available their iPhone kit. It looks like a slick interface, but now AT&T has come out with their GPS and turn by turn app. Free to download but $9.95 US per month to subscribe to, you will have paid for the upcoming $99.95 US TomTom system in about 10 months if you go the AT&T route (that is if TomTom doesn't change the price they announced at WWDC). This may be preferable based on how the two apps compare, but we won't know that until the TomTom version is released. We do know that the AT&T version doesn't store maps, instead it downloads them as you need them so this could be a problem if you are in an area with no coverage. I believe the TomTom version will come with downloadable maps for various areas. The AT&T version also does not come with the cool charging/car kit adapter, so TomTom is ahead of the game in two areas in my opinion, at least for now.
