A See-Through iPhone 4 from iFixit

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 03:00 AM

"Apple engineers went to great lengths to conceal the innards of the iPhone 4 with an elegant glass case that looks like a cool black monolith, but now teardown wizards over at iFixit have tweaked that design in order to expose the guts of the handset to the world."

I suppose if the back of my iPhone 4 were damaged, this might be a nice option, and cheaper than a regular repair since the glass panel sells for $29.95 USD. A caveat though, this will only work on the GSM iPhones due to the layout change with the CDMA version, sorry Verizon customers! You can find out more at the iFixit site.

Want a Piece of Apple's Fifth Avenue Store?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 09:00 AM

"This one puts the "cult" back in "cult of mac:" someone is auctioning off a broken piece of glass from Apple's Fifth Avenue store on eBay. It's a step from the retail locale's elegant glass staircase, to be precise."

From the ad on eBay: "When these are new, they cost 10K to buy from the German glass-makers. So, since it's cracked I figure it's worth at least $2500, considering the steps are all custom ordered. You could use it as a coffee table on top of some cinder blocks, or just keep it for the sake of keeping it."

Ridiculous.

MacBook / MacBook Pro Trackpad Update Available Now

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Laptops" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._trackpads.html

"Apple has released a software update to address an issue where trackpad clicks would randomly go unrecognized on its latest notebook offerings: the MacBook (Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (Late 2008). "This firmware update addresses an issue where trackpad clicks may not be recognized on MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) computers," the company said."

As I stated in my original review of the MacBook Pro, the trackpad was giving me grief. As cool as it was when it worked, it was finicky in a way that was starting to become counterproductive. A few weeks after its release, a customer wrote to Steve Jobs and got a response that they were aware of the issue and working toward a fix for it. Today was the day and it did exactly that. My trackpad works perfectly now and my only real "issue" with my MBP is now gone. Thankfully, I no longer want to punt it out my kitchen window in frustration. Anyone else grab it yet?

New MacBooks Not "Clicking" With Owners?

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple Laptops" @ 11:00 AM

http://arstechnica.com/journals/app...trackpad-issues

"Apple is reportedly looking into issues regarding its no-buttoned glass trackpad on its new MacBooks and MacBook Pros. According to a blog post by an Apple fan, he had sent an e-mail to Steve Jobs over issues he was having with the new hardware. He then received a call from an Apple representative shortly after sending the message, who said that Apple was currently "looking into the complaints, but has no immediate resolution."

I'm just putting the finishing touches on my review of the new MacBook Pro, and honestly I haven't bumped into this precise issue. I have had my share of fidgitiness (is that even a word?) with the tracking, but the clicking seems to be working fine. The good news, of course, is that Apple seems to have gotten enough complaints that they're actually looking into it. I'm wondering though; if you've already gotten yours, are you having issues with the trackpad clicking or any other issues with the new glass trackpad? I'm interested to know how widespread this actually is.
