Apple at the Top of Fortune's Most Admired Companies

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 08:58 AM

http://9to5mac.com/2012/03/01/apple...e+Intelligence)

"The 12 months of 2011 were an exhilarating ride for Apple of Cupertino, Calif. It went through a major leadership transition after the company lost its cofounder Steve Jobs and op-chief Tim Cook took the reigns and appointed several new executives. The iPhone 4S became a huge success and pushed Apple's market capitalization above the half a trillion-dollar valuation."

Changes good and bad through the last year for Apple, but Fortune Magazine still ranked Apple first on the annual list of most admired companies. The future of the company had some doubters with the passing of Steve Jobs, but it appears all is well and on solid ground, so far that is. And of special note, this is the 5th year in a row Apple has landed at the top.

Apple Moves Up 13 Spots on Largest Retail Chain List

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 12:27 PM

http://www.ifoapplestore.com/db/201...annual-ranking/

"Among an industry list of the 100 largest U.S. retail chains, there were few changes at the top-except for Apple."

Last year 57th place. This year? 34th with $9.82 billion in revenues, and Walmart still reigns supreme at number one with $418 billion. Yes, $418 billion in revenues. The top 20 companies don't change much according to Chain Store Age Magazine, the keeper of the list. You can download the full survey here, and it lists the 100 companies as well as details about each one.

How Tech Savvy is Your City?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 01:30 PM

http://mashable.com/2011/08/08/ipad...able+(Mashable)

"Where do early adopters of consumer tech congregate in the U.S.? Not where you might expect, according to a survey appearing in the September issue of Men's Health, which hits newsstands Tuesday."

Plano, TX. Not exactly the first city that would have come to mind if I were asked which city came out on tops as the city with the most early tech adopters, but that is exactly what landed as number one. It even beat out San Francisco, which came out at number 3. The criteria was as follows:

"To determine the rankings, editors looked at tablet use based on ad impressions from mobile ad network Chitika, the number of Apple and Best Buy stores per capita, and the percentage of households that own tablets, notebooks or laptops."

If you live in Toledo, OH you may not even know what a tablet is since your city came in dead last. You can see the entire list here.

What Has Your iPhone Replaced?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:41 AM

http://www.devost.net/2009/06/18/23...e-has-replaced/

"I started thinking about what a converged device the iPhone is and compiled this impressive list of devices I used to carry that are now replaced by my iPhone. This is an unprecedented level of convergence if you ask me. A quick informal tally shows that the iPhone is replacing $2700.00 dollars worth of equipment and several pounds worth of gear."

As I read through his list I was surprised how many of the devices my iPhone had replaced that I never really thought about. Check out the list and see how your items compare, you might be surprised.

T3 Gadget of the Year? iPad of Course!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 06:21 AM

http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/arti...the_year_award/

"T3's Gadget Awards for 2010 are out, and Apple took top honors in several categories including Gadget of the Year with the iPad. Apple came out on top in five of the 19 categories including Innovation of the Year, Commuter Gadget of the Year, Retailer of the Year, and Computer of the Year in addition to Gadget of the Year."

Apple garnered quite a few of the awards as you can see above, with the iPhone 4 beating the iPad for the Commuter Gadget of the Year award. Phone of the Year was won by the HTC Desire however. Can't win them all right?

Apple #56 on Fortune 500 List

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/apple-jump...t=Google+Reader

"Apple's fortunes just keep improving - literally. The Cupertino, Calif. maker of iconic consumer electronics reached 56 in Fortune magazine's Fortune 500 list, rising 15 spots in the annual ranking of corporate success. Apple's $36.5 billion in revenue for 2009 put it just behind 10th-place HP ($114.5 billion) and 38th-place Dell ($52.9 billion.)"

This moves it ahead of Walt Disney and McDonald's on the profitability list, but Microsoft and Google are still ahead of Apple when it comes to profits. 2009 gave investors a 146.9 percent return rate which left the usual (since 1999) 23.4 percent return in the dust.

"I'm Rich(er)!" Steve Jobs

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.macrumors.com/2010/03/10...richest-person/

"In its annual list of the world's billionaires, Forbes this year ranked Apple CEO Steve Jobs in a tie with six others for 136th place with a net worth of $5.5 billion. Jobs' net worth is up from $5.1 billion in an October 2009 Forbes ranking of richest Americans and up from $3.4 billion and 178th place in last year's world ranking."

Doesn't hurt that Apple stock is up more than 150% from last year. But he still has a ways to go to catch up to number one on the list, Carlos "Slim" Helú, who has net worth of $53.5 billion, bumping out Bill Gates. Just so you know, "Slim" was able to build up his wealth in the telecom industry and he takes in roughly $33 million....PER DAY!

4 out of 10 Are Apple Products, Well on This List Anyway

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/12/30/appl...-of-the-decade/

"Our friends over at Engadget have selected their top 10 gadgets of the last decade (the naughts, as I like to call them), and Apple has come up big: four out of the ten choices are made by the company from Cupertino."

Yet another list! But an interesting one, which of course has the iPod and iPhone on it as well as OS X and the Titanium Powerbook G4 from 2001. I always loved that laptop.

How Many "Best Of" Lists Are There?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 11:00 AM

http://brainstormtech.blogs.fortune...-of-the-decade/

"Steve Jobs and Apple appeared in an extraordinary number of 2009's "Best of" lists. Our favorite: 'There's an app for that,' the Yale Book of Quotations' No. 3 quote of the 2009, right before Rep. Joe Wilson's 'You lie' and after Captain Sully Sullenberger's 'We're going to be in the Hudson.'"

I just found this interesting from the aspect of not realizing there were so many lists you could be ranked in! It seems that this will just lead to "Best Of" lists becoming more and more irrelevant unless it is for something that is a bit more objective than "Top Ten Quotes of 2009." Unless it is something you can quantify, hard for me to put much stock in some of these lists. And maybe that is more to the point, that they aren't to be taken serious just generate some thought and discussion. What are your thoughts?
