"Apple has once again scheduled an international weekend of retail store grand openings, with locations in Italy, Germany and the United States, and with a hint of a store opening in a fourth country."

This will be a busy weekend, since Bologna, Hamburg and El Paso all have retail stores opening. Added to the list is the Braehead UK store so four in all.

Germany Grants Apple Injunction Against Galaxy Tab

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 10:17 AM

"Samsung was dealt a blow on Friday when a court in Germany upheld an injunction blocking the sale of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in the country. Apple had requested the sales ban as part of its patent infringement suit against Samsung over allegations that the company stole the look and feel of the iPad and iPhone for its Android-based mobile devices."

"Informed customers" could tell the Galaxy Tab was designed to look like the iPad according to the court, and why wouldn't they since it is the tablet to have isn't it? I do think it's funny that Samsung said their design was "generic" when it certainly looks like an iPad. The only difference is the camera is on the side rather than the top and there is no home button. Obviously Samsung is going to appeal this but until then, they won't be selling the Galaxy Tab in the European Union and will postpone selling it in Australia until the end of September. I will be curious to see how the US court system handles this same complaint since Apple has filed for an injunction here as well. What are your thoughts on this, good? Bad?

Apple Lowers iPad Price in Germany

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:00 AM

"Despite of the "common currency" and the EU, doing business in Europe is a hassle. So much of a hassle actually that even Apple just couldn't get it right."

Yesterday we noted Steve Job's email responses about international pricing, and for Germany he noted they added a copyright tax. Problem is, that is only on devices that have 40GB or more of memory. So Apple had to lower the prices on the 16GB and 32GB models. Woops. Macworld has posted a comparison of the international pricing for the iPad if you are interested.

Why the iPad Price Difference Internationally Steve?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.macrumors.com/2010/05/08...cing-and-taxes/

"With Apple's announcement on Friday regarding availability of the iPad in nine new countries later this month, a number of potential customers expressed dismay at the apparent higher prices in those countries relative to those in the United States. Several of those customers took the time to email Apple CEO Steve Jobs with complaints on the issue, two of whom shared his identical responses with us."

For the customer in the UK, Steve said "Please educate yourself. UK prices must by law include VAT, which is around 18%. US prices do not include tax." When a customer in Germany sent a similar email, Steve said "Blame your government. Germany just added a new copyright levy for computers." Obviously we don't have those taxes (yet anyway) in the US so this just adds to the cost of the device. I think they have always had a price difference because of things such as this haven't they?

Microsoft Says Nein!

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 10:00 AM

"Probably still reeling from all publicity around these shots, Microsoft reportedly told journalists gathered for a company press event in Germany not to use or mention Apple products."

The translation from German goes something like this: "While at a Windows Mobile 6.5 demonstration in Munich, Germany a journalist was warned by a Microsoft spokesman not to mention or use Apple products...since it was a Microsoft event the journalist had previously told everyone that he had never owned an easier to use cell phone than the iPhone."

Apple Intros iTunes Movies in Germany

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple News" @ 11:00 AM

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/200...4/16itunes.html

"Apple® today announced that movies from major film studios including Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM), The Walt Disney Studios, Sony Pictures Television and independents including Universum and Shorts International are now available on the iTunes® Store in Germany for purchase and rent (www.itunes.de). Making its debut with over 500 Hollywood and German films, the iTunes Store offers favorites including “Quantum Of Solace,” “The Dark Knight,” “Pineapple Express,” “High School Musical 3: Senior Year,” “Eagle Eye,” “Die Fälscher,” “Keinohrhasen” and “Aimee & Jaguar.”"

Good news for Germany! Honestly, my AppleTV is pretty much the only way I rent movies anymore which leads me to think that once Germany is turned on to something like this, if they're like me, it'll be a pretty big success there too.
