UK Also Offering iPad 2 on Launch Day

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.electronista.com/article...carrier.status/

"At least three major third-party retailers should be carrying the iPad 2 during the US launch, information indicates. A definite partner is Best Buy, which has already posted a splash image advertising a March 11th rollout. Meanwhile, a source claims that iPad 2 SKUs have entered inventory systems for Walmart and Sam's Club."

And besides those US retailers, UK retailers Orange and T-Mobile will offer it when it's available, tentatively on March 25th. And in other news, Rogers of Canada is also going to offer the Personal Hotspot option when iOS 4.3 comes out.

Rogers Canada Releases Their iPad Pricing for Data

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 08:00 AM

"Rogers released their iPad pricing today. Unlike AT&T, they have a cap at 5GB and it costs C$35 compared with $30 US for the 'unlimited plan'."

Yesterday we noted that Orange Uk and Telstra in Australia announced their data plans for the iPad, and Rogers is also in the mix now. Initially Rogers had an option to add an iPad to an existing plan for $20.00, but apparently they have taken that out of the plan. But they do allow iPhone tethering which is a plus.

Rogers and Bell Issue Recall for MiFi 2372

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.electronista.com/article...of.mifi.issues/

"Rogers today joined Bell in recalling the MiFi 2372. It explained the issue and warned that the lithium-ion battery pack in the router could swell and cut power. The battery cover is reportedly also difficult to remove and could damage the battery or the router if forced open."

Rogers is sending out envelopes to replace the batteries and covers, with an expected turnaround of 7 to 10 days, as well credit for time spent without the device. This is the HSPA version of the MiFi, so potential exists that it could affect other carriers.

Rogers in Canada Offering Tethering for iPhone Users

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.macdailynews.com/index.p..._free_data_tet/

""Rogers today revealed that its free data tethering promo is becoming a permanent fixture of its plans," Electronista reports."

Anyone with a Canadian 1GB or larger data plan has the option of using the iPhone or other smartphone as a 3G connector without having to pay a separate fee. The data is taken out of the monthly transfer allowance. There are some limits, however, such as not being able to use it with US data roaming plans or the shared plans for family and 3G modems. This puts Rogers in line with Bell and Telus. Wonder if this will put a fire under AT&T to do the same since it has been over a year since they promised "coming soon" hasn't it? Somehow I doubt it, what are your thoughts?

Canada Gets a Discount

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 08:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/11/02/upda...r-canada-annou/

"For those of you in Canada, good news. The cell carriers Telus and Bell have announced pricing and availability for the iPhone 3G and 3GS. In addition, Rogers will be announcing an update to its pricing."

Telus and Bell announced their pricing and availability, ranging from $99.00 CAD for the 8GB to $299.00 CAD for the 32GB 3GS. The data plans vary a bit, ranging from $50.00 CAD to $100.00 CAD with variety of plans in between for both companies depending on the data plan you choose. Rogers is also supposed to be announcing their plan soon. From what I gather in the article, location may be your determining factor due to the coverage areas, so check out the coverage map provided by iphoneincanada.ca prior to purchase.

I agree with the author; I'm jealous of all the competition our neighbors to the North have going on and wish we had it!

Telus and Bell Will Sell iPhone in Canada

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 10:30 AM

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-1...subj=News-Apple

"Many Canadians are cheering as Telus and Bell announced plans Tuesday to begin selling Apple's popular iPhone, ending Rogers reign as the exclusive iPhone carrier in Canada."

Both companies will begin selling the iPhone in November of this year, after upgrading their networks to support HSPA (high-speed packet access), which is used by the iPhone. Both companies previously had CDMA networks. This will give Canadians three companies to choose from, as Rogers is the other company in Canada selling the iPhone. They may get quite a lot of business as Rogers also has a very unhappy customer base, as evidenced by websites that were created like www.ruinediphone.com.
