Apple Set to Take Number Two Smartphone Spot Worldwide

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 11:30 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...hone_maker.html

"An inevitable shakeup in worldwide smartphone rankings is set to take place in the coming months, when Apple is expected to surpass Nokia in smartphone sales, and Samsung will become the world's largest smartphone maker."

Already number two in the US behind Samsung [link], now Apple is about to surpass Nokia worldwide into the number two spot with Samsung again taking number one. So world stats are about to match what has already happened in the US. Nokia still has the total mobile phone market lead but this is quite the achievement since Nokia has held the top spot across the boards since 1996. Apple is a relative newcomer since their iPhone series started in 2007.

abroadband: Data Access for Travellers

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone Talk" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.abroadband.com/

My friend Rafe Blanford pointed out this service, which I hadn't heard of until now. It looks interesting - at current rates, it's about 86 cents USD/CAD per MB, and they support SIMs, microSIMs, and USB sticks. That's not "I'm going to order a TV season on iTunes and download it all" cheap, but if you were careful about not downloading email attachments and were sparing with your Internet access, you could make a $40 investment last a week or two. While you can check your online balance easily, it seems this isn't a true pre-pay solution...the metre keeps running without stopping, so be careful what you decide to download.

Note that this is for data only: this is for your laptop, tablet, or I-only-want-Internet-phone. If you want to use your phone abroad and do voice calls, text, etc. you'll need to get a SIM from a wireless carrier. Anyone know of a service similar to this but for full phone service?

Promo Codes for Mac App Store Functional Worldwide

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/02/03/mac-...-now-available/

"Back in December Macstories reported that Apple wasn't making promo codes (simple codes used to give away copies of an app) available in the Mac App Store. But it looks like Apple has reconsidered, as Macstories is reporting a change, allowing Mac App Store promo codes in any Mac App Store worldwide (it took a while for iOS App Store codes to go international). As before, developers are limited to 50 codes per version of an app."

I'm sure the developers are happy about this. I wonder why it takes so long to allow this type of thing, I wouldn't think they would have to worry about regulations on this, or would they? I'm just curious as it doesn't seem like something that should be that hard to do, or take this long to allow it to function. Any thoughts?

Apple is a Global Champion

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/143...ss_products_mac

"It is no secret that the worldwide economy isn't in the best of shape. While I'm sure we could argue for days on end what got us all into this mess (I, for one, blame someone other than myself) there are some bright spots."

According to a list by A.T. Kearney, Apple is a global champion. The company compiled a list based on the largest 2,500 companies worldwide from 2004 to 2008, measuring their sales and value growth, to come up with the rankings. Based on their criteria, the top five companies in order are Nintendo, Google, Apple, Doosan Heavy Industries and Hyundai Heavy Industries.
