Altec Lansing InMotion Air Wireless Bluetooth Speaker System Reviewed

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 01:00 PM

http://www.trustedreviews.com/mp3/r...eaker-System/p1

"Every year the gadget world is swamped by new buzz words, technological breakthroughs or product types that we simply must buy into. For music fans the must-have gadget is a dock and the buzz word it must now have is 'AirPlay' - Apple's wireless streaming connectivity capable of supporting lossless audio. So can we take a wireless speaker with none of this functionality seriously? Actually yes..."

Bluetooth-based speakers tend to be more on the "suck" side of the spectrum than the "awesome" side, but it seems Altec Lansing has pulled a rabbit out of their hat here and delivered a system that actually allows Bluetooth-transmitted audio to sound good. Go figure! If you've got a Bluetooth device and want to listen to music without having to connect it to a speaker dock, this looks like a good solution.

Bluetooth Speaker Review: Jawbone Jambox vs. Soundmatters foxL v2

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone Articles & Resources" @ 07:00 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/28/...-foxl-v2-fight/

"Two portable speakers clamber into the ring, each boasting big, beautiful sound for their diminutive size. Both cost $200. Both have the same technology inside. The Jawbone Jambox and the Soundmatters foxL v2 with Bluetooth each want to be your wireless audio wunderkind, blasting music and taking Bluetooth calls. At best, you're only going to buy one. Which speaker should you choose? Following our Jambox review, we got our hands on a foxL and put the two head to head, and after the break you'll see which one came out on top -- both literally and figuratively."

What's that? You have the powerful desire to be able to break-dance no matter where you are, putting on a show for passers-by? Then, boy, you'll want to read this review to pick the best wee speaker to allow said possibility!

Wi-Fi Direct Certification Starts Today, The End of Bluetooth?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "The Competition" @ 11:27 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/25/...-device-transm/

"So, Bluetooth -- last fall didn't end up being as frightful as you had probably imagined, but this fall is bound to be different. Or so the Wi-Fi Alliance says. If you'll recall, Wi-Fi Direct promised to do what Bluetooth had been doing for years, but with far less fuss and on a protocol that's much more widespread. A solid year has come and gone, and we've heard nary a word from any company who plans on implementing it."

But now comes the day that the certification process for devices begins. Basically, using a device that is Wi-Fi Direct certified doesn't require a network connection, they create their own and allow you to connect to other certified devices such as printers. Speeds for Wi-Fi Direct are upwards of 300Mbps since its based on the 802.11b/g/n channels, along with greater range than what Bluetooth currently offers. So the thought is that this could be the end of Bluetooth, what are your thoughts?

Bluetooth Headset Unveiled by Bose

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.ipodnn.com/articles/10/1....stayhear.tips/

"Bose has unveiled its first Bluetooth headset for mobile phones. The Bose Bluetooth Headset incorporates its enhanced version of its TriPort acoustics and includes a high-quality mic that is equipped with adaptive audio adjustment for tweaking the volume of a user's voice in relation to the background noise to optimize call quality."

I love Bose stuff, and have several of their products, so I'm interested in how well this will work since I don't have very good luck with Bluetooth headsets. I have Bluetooth in my car so I don't have to worry about it too much now, but if their past equipment is any indication, this headset should be pretty good but we won't know until Spring 2011. But for $180.00 USD it better work flawlessly. How about you, any good or bad Bluetooth headsets you want to share?

Jawbone Icon Headset With an iPhone Bonus

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 10:00 AM

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2010/01/...phone-friendly/

"A quick note to inform you that Aliph has just released a new version of its premium Jawbone Bluetooth headset. Besides its top of the line design and an integrated new chip that allows it to make your voice sound creepy, the Jawbone Icon comes with an interesting new feature for iPhone owners."

I wish all the headsets did this, the one thing about the Apple headset that I miss (hated the headset itself, never fit correctly). I like the "Hero" version of the Jawbone Icon, but I can't see myself wearing the gold "Bombshell" version though can you? Ok, don't answer that...

Jabra Debuts Stone Bluetooth Headset

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.cultofmac.com/jabras-sto...h-headset/19056

"Jabra's new Stone headset is the first non-dorky Bluetooth headset I've ever seen. Actually, it's the second. The first was a Secret Service-style single earbud from Hong Kong that clipped to your shirt. Trouble is, it sounded awful."

I'd have to check in person, but from the looks of it I'm not sure this would work well if you wear glasses, at least the thicker frame glasses I like. That has always been a problem with headsets for me - getting them to work and fit well with the glasses I choose to wear. This will retail for about $130.00 USD and will be offered exclusively in AT&T stores. However battery life is questionable, reports of one or two hours usage max, which is a problem. I do like the looks of it though.

Apple Releases Bluetooth and Hard Drive Updates

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:00 AM

http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2...rive-noises.ars

"Has your MacBook Pro's 7200rpm hard drive been emitting confusing noises? What about bugs while trying to use a wireless Mighty Mouse? If so, Apple's latest series of Software Updates may cure what ails you."

Apple acknowledged the problem with the hard drive about 10 days ago, and now they have the fix in for it, as well as the Bluetooth connectivity problems when using the Mighty Mouse and wireless keyboard. Bluetooth Firmware Update 2.0.1 fixes problems for any Mac that has Bluetooth based on the Broadcom chipset. The Hard Drive Firmware Update 2.0 only applies to the drives shipped in the June 2009 MacBook Pro.

Need a Slick Looking Bluetooth Keyboard?

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Other Apple Hardware" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.appletell.com/apple/comm...ge-mac-edition/

"Logitech is known for keyboards, and rightfully so. Years of keyboard experience have enabled them to create a keyboard that's good enough to deserve a Mac edition. They've really outdone themselves with the diNovo Edge Mac Edition Bluetooth keyboard."

Yes, its true, you can get a wireless Mighty Mouse for $69.00 USD, then pick up the wireless Apple Keyboard for $79.00 USD and be out $149.00 USD. Or you can opt for this new keyboard from Logitech for $179.95 USD from the Apple store online, without the mouse. The reviewer touts the reliability and how quick it connects, but also the fact that it has the same layout as the regular Apple keyboards so all your shortcuts work the same. I have to say this keyboard really is a looker, and it would look great sitting in my entertainment center as a media center keyboard. Heck I'd even like to get one for my desktop.

iPhone and Bluetooth Keyboard Playing Nice

Posted by Vincent Ferrari in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.ubiqkom.org/blog/?p=41

"Here is a short video showing the interacting devices (Apple wireless keyboard, iPhone, communicating over Bluetooth) in operation."

I have to say my heart skipped a beat when I saw this. I may have to jailbreak my iPhone now because, honestly, if I could type with my Apple BT Keyboard on my iPhone, I'd have much less of a need to carry around my MBP all the time. Anyone else salivating?

Bluetooth Webcam Announced for Macs 1st Quarter 2009

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple News" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/03/...-macs/#comments

"It looks like Mac users tired of their built-in webcams and concerned about the clutter caused by regular USB cams will soon have another option to consider, as Ecamm Network has just announced what it's claiming to be the world's first Bluetooth webcam."

Not so sure this will be a big seller among Mac users with this form factor, especially since the price is expected to be in the range of $150 USD. Looks a bit odd and not in a good way. They definitely could use some design lessons from Apple.
