TWC TV App Adds Several Sports Options

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2012/04/23/time...ports-channels/

"On Friday, Time Warner Cable added a number of national and regional sports networks to the free TWC TV app for iOS and the TWCTV.com Web portal."

If you are an Expanded Basic or higher customer with Time Warner Cable then you can access more things on your iOS device. Unfortunately, you have to be inside your home. I hate apps that restrict you to staying in your home, but if you are one of their customers it will give you mobility, with limits of course.

Watch ESPN on Your iOS Device

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/04/07/espn...u-do-just-that/

"ESPN is one of those big media producers that has done well on the App Store -- not only has the company released a number of successful apps for its various properties, but the content sells well on iTunes also. Now, the company is actually sending content directly to your iOS device."

The new app from ESPN is called "Watch ESPN" and if you connect it to your Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks or Verizon FiOS TV account you can watch ESPN on the go. I wish Dish would get with the program on this but perhaps soon.

Best Apps for March Madness

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.businessinsider.com/marc...pps-2011-3?op=1

"The month of March has become almost synonymous with the frenzy of college basketball fanaticism known as March Madness."

Of course ESPN Sport Center app is the go to app for anything sport related, but for March Madness it is tough to be the NCAA March Madness app. You can watch all the games via WiFi or 3G as well as monitor your March Madness bracket. There are several other options listed but in my book, it's tough to beat these two.

MLB At Bat Launches

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 06:00 AM

http://www.businessinsider.com/mlbs...+Alley+Insider)

"Major League Baseball's excellent "At Bat" app for iOS launched today, and it's quickly been shooting up the App Store sales charts."

If you are a baseball fan, it's pretty much a no brainer to pick up this app, available now for the iPhone [affiliate link] and the iPad [affiliate link]. The only problem I have is that it grates on me a bit to have to pay the $14.99 USD twice if I want to have it on my iPad and my iPhone, since it isn't a universal app. But I'll just have to choose and most likely it will be on my iPhone since that is usually what I check scores with anyway. If you get it now you can watch some of the Spring Training games as well as get a free preview of MBL.TV. And if you don't care about the full functionality but would still like to get stats and scores, you can always opt for the free lite version of MLB At Bat for iPhone.

If Only it Helped the Devils Win

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 10:00 AM

http://www.maclife.com/article/news...p_purchase_ipad

"The moment has at long last arrived puckheads! Now available as an In App purchase on the NHL Gamecenter Free App on the iPad you can unlock GameCenter Live to gain access to live game video and more."

The free version of NHL GameCenter for iPad [link] is actually pretty good, but if you want even more hockey pick up the NHL GameCenter Premium edition [affiliate link] for $19.99 USD. You get scores, stats, schedules, news and profiles with the free and premium versions, but with the premium version you also get video highlights, live game radio and some condensed game video. To top it off, you can also use this premium app to log in with your online GameCenter Live ID and unlock the live video on the iPad. If you aren't and you want to catch some of the live action on your favorite NHL team, you can upgrade for $119.99 USD from within the app (cheaper than the online price of $169.99 USD). It might sound steep but if you are a hockey fan and want to be able to watch all the games of your team, it isn't too bad of a deal. It's cheaper than the football packages and you get more games. I really have to hand it to the NHL, they make accessing live games very easy, regardless of device.

Get a Deal on Final Fantasy I and II, and ESPN ScoreCenter For Free

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad)" @ 12:26 PM

http://www.tuaw.com/2010/09/29/fina...l-racing-on-sa/

"Square Enix has dropped the price on retro titles Final Fantasy I and II. The games were originally released at US$8.99, but to celebrate more widespread localization, the apps have dropped down to $3.99. Great games, nice price."

The deal is, on this normally $8.99 USD app, the price has been dropped to $3.99 USD for both Final Fantasy I [affiliate link] and Final Fantasy II [affiliate link]. On top of that you can also get the ESPN ScoreCenter app for free now. The ESPN app was $4.99 USD, too bad I didn't wait a month or two and I could have had quite a deal. Oh, and if you are a fan of racing games, Firemint has their Real Racing on sale as well for the price of $2.99 USD [affiliate link].

MLB.com Updated

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple Software (iPhone/iPod Touch)" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.macworld.com/article/142...products_iphone

"Three months after adding live video to its iPhone app, Major League Baseball has made another change that's sure to please fans eager to follow the pennant races. MLB.com At Bat 2009 now gives users the option of watching all games live-albeit at a cost."

I bought this app when it first came out, and while I haven't utilized it to it's fullest, I'm still pretty happy with it. Now you can watch the two free games per day as well as pay $0.99 USD to watch any of the other games on the schedule for that day. Nice use of the in app purchasing capability, oh and it also uses push notifications to let you know when the games are beginning and when they end. If you like baseball, this is your app.

iPhone 3GS and Action Photography

Posted by Jeff Campbell in "Apple iPhone & iPod Touch" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.cultofmac.com/how-to-tak...phone-3gs/14957

"OK, so we've already established that the iPhone camera is capable of some pretty amazing photography, even if you don't use one of the many fantastic photography-related apps available on the Store. One thing I've not seen it used for to date has been action shots; but Oregon-based photographer Jared Souney has been putting his 3GS to good use for just that."

Interesting article on how a pro photographer has been experimenting with his iPhone 3GS to take action shots of BMX competitions for example. This isn't a specific how-to article however, more of a generalized discussion on how he takes the shots, what applications he uses to help him and that sort of thing. Still, I was a able to get a few tips on technique and some new apps to try out from the article so there may be something in it for you too.
